Does anyone know anything for sure about China?

My question is aimed particularly at Covid, but I'm also curious about it in a general sense. I think it was common knowledge at the start of lockdowns that China stopped reporting accurate covid figures, but since then, it's been radio silence. But then I came across this the other day:

and maybe there is something to be said about the spin these big news agencies put on their articles, but I was surprised to read this:
In total 2,487 people have died of the coronavirus in Japan,just over half the number in Chinaand fewer people than on a single day in America several times over the past week. Japan has suffered just 18 deaths per million people,a higher rate than in China, but by far the lowest in the g7, a club of big, industrialised democracies.
I'm surprised to see a 'reputable' organization effectively verifying this kind of information. Am I really supposed to believe China has had such momumental success combating covid.. the most populous country in the world???

It's suspect as chit right?

Is there any information about China that isn't doctored by the CCP???
