Calibrah Moving to Omaha

Any of you cold weather/Nebraska/Midwestern miscers have any advice? Apparently they have snow around this time of year???

Kidding aside, we've (me, my woman+2 kids) downsized a chit-ton these last 2 weeks and are planning on leaving with whatever fits in the van. No furniture, just clothes, toys and the dog. Didn't feel like moving worthless particle board furniture and a fridge 1500 miles. Thinking about hitting some National Parks and haven't picked a path yet. This covid chit calmer outside of California?

Of the remaining states you thought of moving to, you decided on Nebraska?

I'm assuming there's family there right?

Nope.

Economic opportunity. I can always pick up and move again if we have to/want to. Giving this a shot before I can't and am stuck where I'm at. Considered quite a few states, but this city seems to have most of what I'm looking for. Honestly the idea of leaving this place has me appreciating California even more now lol. Throwing shorts on and jamming out of the house for whatever reason in the middle of January ain't happening in Omaha... Literally hundreds of unique restaurants and easy access to any nationality food/groceries within minutes. Not to mention the beaches/mountains/outdoors life. Oh well. Most people around me living the rat race too busy to enjoy this stuff (including myself mostly) anyway.

I mean, I understand that, but why not a state like Texas? Surely Texas would have more opportunities for career growth than Nebraska.

Nebraska in general you have a point, Omaha however isn't tiny. Extremely low unemployment, and better pay to cost of living ratio. I was also limiting my search to transfer locations for work and also availability of work should I leave the company. I'm a warehouse picker currently, and Texas doesn't pay jack, they do ok in Nebraska tho. I went to school for refrigeration, which I can also start in a better position in Nebraska.

Lots of restaurants.

Dundee, memorial park, elmwood park area is very nice.

Blackstone district is very social (or was).

The police force is strong.

Huge hospitals.

Call centers are massive. Omaha steaks and Gallup for example.

Husker game days in Lincoln are epic even when we suck.

Great zoo

Lots of coffee shops

A few nice malls.

No pro sports

No mountains

Nature spots include Fontenelle, Neale Woods, Mahoney Park etc.

South Omaha is hispanic, west Omaha is white, north Omaha is black. The rest is a mix.

Some people like the old market downtown.

Town will likely rebound faster than many others post-covid. Mayor and Governor are very conservative.

- Runzas . . . you eat 'em.
- When it gets cold . . . it feels really cold. Plan to get warm clothes if you aren't taking much.
- Summers are humid as hell in eastern NE, so be prepared (it's like walking outside and getting hit with a hot, wet blanket)
- Fireflies in the summer are kinda cool.
- You'll get used to the tornado siren testing . . . and them going off in storms.
- Get to a Husker football game when COVID is finally over . . . it's an epic experience even when the team sucks.

Thanks, everything I've read about Omaha is that it's highly underated city and has a very strong economy that will get through this recent BS better than most. Extremely low UE, diverse economy, and great COL.
