Chest machines superior to regular bench or smith?

I can’t seem to get the same pump on planet fitness smith bench as I do on their dedicated chest or incline bench.

I always get tricep burn on the smith but never on the dedicated chest machines. What gives?

Lift the bench in smith a little bit from the bottom, like with a small plate, so it gives you a very very slight decline.

I already do that for the decline bench. But the flat and incline just aren’t the same on the smith as they are on the targeted machines

You should probably focus more on losing weight fatso. Get back on the treadmill.

So what's the problem?

Maybe you're built weird, so that specific machine just happens to favor your particular anatomy compared to another machine/exercise.

chest machine is definitely more superior than the smith. smith is horrible. no idea why they invented that machine.

hammer strength chest machines are awesome. if ur gym has those. i think you could build an amazing chest just with them

cope

smith machine users only chose it cause they can lift more weight plates. it takes the stabilization out of the movement

depends on the smith machine. first gym i ever went to had smiths that didnt appear to have a counter weight so if you would let go it would just drop. But you could still use the hooks for safety

That's a worthless gym.

You need to use dumbbells not machines or smith.

Dumbbells provide a balanced workout while a bar more machine will not.

On side is always going to be stronger and you can't account for that on a bar or machine. You can with dumbells.

So, if you are have 50lbs in each hand, that is what you are lifting with both sides of your body.

Strong signature. I remember when you first started posting here. You happen to have some of your early threads bookmarked?

Go with whatever gives you the best pump. If that’s the machine, fine, results are all that matter, the rest is talk.

I think barbell and dumbbell bench are both essential to building a good chest, but machines really help you fill the muscles with blood after stretching them out doing the plyometrics.

My chest days alternate by primary plyometric (incline/flat/decline) barbell bench. Then I follow up with flat dumbbell bench on incline/decline weeks and incline dumbbell bench on flat weeks.

After that, I'm on the supine press machine doing one of like five routines I've written-- imo, this is the best machine for chest and it's not even close. After that it's all really hyper-focused isometric work.

I'd probably agree with this. I do not use the barbell for chest because I do not like it. You can do plenty with dumbells and cable machines.

How do you get a good stretch on chest when you do dips?

I feel it a bit in my chest but most I feel like I'm fatiguing triceps and shoulders way before chest.

Doing push ups and push up variants gives me the best chest pump of all bodyweight exercises.

I lean myself way more forward so the triceps barely get touched. Huge chest pump and some shoulder gains. It's nearly a horizontal push-up that's how far I lean.

Then I do barbell work with bench press, horizontal then two angles. I will do wide, normal and close grip too.

You could add stuff like flys etc but when I did them I didn't notice really any size or strength gains.

Caveat is I use a home gym maybe if I was in a word class gym I'd incorporate more. But my chest size and pressing strength is very solid.

I do push-ups too, but usually if I am in a rush and I need to wake up my body before I head out. I have a whole "Ghetto lounge" workout I do including table pulls. I made this up when I was traveling a lot.

Nice. Thanks for the advice.

I guess that's my issue-- I try to sit back into the dip more. I've started adding lightweight flies in at the end of some workouts, but only recently-- no strength benefits I'm sure, but I've found it really helps me stretch out those last few muscle fibers so it helps with hypertrophy.

Pushing is easily my weakest movement. My max bench in 225 for a clean 3 and it took me nearly a decade to get there.

Let me clarity about the dips, I lean forward so basically my head and chest are horizontal, my legs are still sort of angled/dangling. I am not fully horizontal like a gymnast lol. You'll know when you're learning far enough anyway, your chest will feel 90% of the pump.

also, there is nothing wrong with machines/smith if your goal is hypertrophy. It's not one better than the other, use both to get the best of both worlds, and find a better gym

wish i could agree but out of all the gyms ive been to ive found exactly 1 chest press machine that felt awesome, a couple that were useable, and a chit ton i couldnt use no matter how badly i wanted to

i swear theyre all made for people with t-rex arms, a lot of them start so low i cant get the damn things in position without feeling like im gonna tear my pec, then whatever genius designs the damn things decides it should have angled handles so going wide will **** your wrists and going narrow is 90% tricep
