On a more serious note - and this is a topic close to my heart - try to hide them in places where people reach too without looking first, like; the top shelf of the cupboard, inside a cutlery/linen drawer, inside a shoe.. Inside a coffee mugs a good one, when it floats to the top.

This lets the victim get up close before realising it for MAXIMUM effect. If you want to kick it up a notch cover it in olive oil to make it slimey to the touch
