This film makes me think of the quiz show scandals of the 1950s. Herb Stempel was the reigning champ of the most famous quiz show called Twenty-One. Unbeknownst to the public, the episodes of the show were rigged, with the contestants knowing the answers, and being told when to say an incorrect answer. In Herb's final appearance, his losing question to Charles VanDoren -- one of the most famous game show contestants of all time -- was who won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1955. Marty was his favorite movie, and he knew very well it was the correct answer. However, TPTB forced him to say On the Waterfront. Everyone who knew Herb knew something was amiss with this response. Not much longer later is when everything was exposed, and poster boy Charles VanDoren went from being beloved to hated by America, and game shows changed forever.
