Thread: Do you respect Elon Musk?

Do you respect Elon Musk?
He is obviously extremely intelligent and driven. But aside from that, it seems to me he thinks for himself and decides what he supports based on rational thought instead of being brainwashed by political propaganda. This quality is becoming increasingly rare. He contributes to both political parties for example, and is registered as independent. He is actually using his wealth to change the world instead of just hoarding it. Imo, using your wealth to push innovation and technological advancement is more beneficial to humanity in the long run than simply dumping billions into various humanitarian charities like Bill Gates, although what he is doing has value as well. I fully expect the low IQ, tribal, anti-science miscers that populate the misc to dislike him for political reasons though.

I'd vote for him, king of the world. Or mars. Whatever.

Absolutely.
Geniuses like Musk have pushed the human race towards the future. Look at what the guy has achieved in the last 10 years, and he's only starting. And you are right, he's not interested in some local, small minded ideas and problems, Musk is chasing something much, much greater. Who knows what he might be able to achieve by the end of his life.
Not that he needs it but I'd say give the man a blank check and let him do his thing. While low IQ's are arguing about homosexuality, politics, vaccination and whatever else you see on the news, dude is planning Mars missions and beyond. If you don't respect what the guy has achieved then I don't know who you can.

yes. he bet on himself. zero salary and took it all in stock options.
Back in 2018, Elon Musk negotiated a controversial pay package (pdf). The Tesla CEO agreed to receive no salary or bonuses in exchange for a purely performance-based compensation plan. Each time Tesla’s market capitalization crossed a milestone, starting at $100 billion, Musk would receive Tesla stock options up to a market cap of $650 billion. Each payday would be worth hundreds of millions—or even billions—depending on the stock’s fortunes.
At the time, observers doubted the $54 billion electric automaker could enrich Musk as much as the pay package envisioned. Those doubts are gone.
On Jan. 7, Elon Musk surpassed Jeff Bezos as the world’s richest human with an estimated net worth of $185 billion, up from just over $27 billion in 2020. His wealth has been driven by meteoric stock price of Tesla, now valued at $773 billion, up seven-fold since last year.

The day he openly speaks out about how Mandela and ANC turned his once-prosperous native country of South Africa into a failed economy third world sheet hole and how politicians of the same caliber are now doing the same thing to his new adopted country I will be his fanboy number 1

"Hoarding wealth" is so fukking dumb. What does that even mean? First of all, most these guys don't have that much liquid cash. They're not Scrooge McDuck. But even if they were hoarding it, what's the issue? Remember, money is a medium of exchange. Person 1 gives Person 2 a good or service in exchange for money so Person 1 can go on to trade that money to some Person 3 for a good or service. If Person 1 keeps giving tons of people goods and services for money, they're just giving and giving and giving without taking anything. Person 1 isn't obligated to go use that money. They're in fact making everyone else wealthier because they're not using the medium of exchange to take their fair share of goods and services. The fact that people are giving Person 1 money in the first place means Person 1 is changing the world for the better. Whether Person 1 reinvests it into the business proving this good or service, hoarding it, or spending it is really up to him and doesn't really make him a better or worse person.

Color me surprised at the responses so far. The thing I like about him is that despite all his success, he is still humble, and moderate in his political activities and beliefs. I do hope he continues to largely stay out of politics and just focuses on what he is doing.

he's the only one thinking of the future aside from the japanese
with all the money white countries have it's been shameful what hasn't been done in terms of technological or city/country advancement. we should have a rapid-public transit system as good as japan by now on this side of the world but nope not even started on something like that.

Yes.
I had to design a self-driving car for a class, with top-down logistics.
To take on this risk as a business owner requires a lot of confidence in your talent.
I think less of him than the fanfare assigns him.

Amazon has made society vastly wealthier by being the biggest single marketplace in history that bring goods to everyone the most efficiently from the palm of their hand and comfort of their home.
What they do in their lifetimes is what matters most. What they "leave behind" is pretty inconsequential.

That they won't use that money as leverage to distort markets and governments?

I feel like you're almost certainly measuring what Elon's companies are doing against what Gates is doing with his own personal wealth. What exactly is Elon doing with money actually coming out of his pocket? Considering he's new to this and his wealth is based almost entirely on Tesla's stock run, I'm gonna say it's highly doubtful he has dumped any large volumes of TSLA to fund philanthropic endeavors
And can only assume you're pretty young OP because there was a time when Gates was completely changing the world

Aside from that, Gates is a big supporter of what IMO is the only realistic solution to fossil fuel dependence: nuclear power. Dude is co-founder of TerraPower, a company working on the next generation of nuclear reactors
