Clearly but that would take away the whole purpose of life.

People should live right irrespective of whether there is a God or a promise of the afterlife. Nothing would be sincere in life if this were the case and our time on earth would be devalued since it wouldn't matter at all considering you're going to spend 70-80 years on earth and then go to heaven for eternity.

So I prefer not knowing and defining my own meaning or purpose.

Good luck putting faith in humanity to do the ''right'' thing.

the value of life is realized with the certainty of death

immortality would be a curse

I'm agnostic and always strive to do the right thing.

I mess up but at least I'm sincere in my actions and not living simply to be rewarded for eternal life. My actions are genuine and there isn't any rewards attached to them.

But yeah let's go to church, do a bunch of fuked up chit and then repent for our sins because that's better.

Complete jargon. If we go by what you are saying, then we shouldn't have any social laws. Heck lets not punish murder because people should be sincere enough not to do it and if they do, well they weren't sincere. What a great way to live. You have way too many privileges in your life if you think that is what the reality of life is.

I dont care if YOU are trying to live your life the best. The point is that SOCIETY can not be expected to be able to govern itself. Thats just not reality. Hence religion and its moral laws being necessary.

What does going to Church and doing ''fukked up chit'' got to do with the moral principles of religion and its purpose.

The bible says if you repent for your sins you will be promised an afterlife.

This makes living well cheapened. You're living well for a reward not because it's the right thing to do and you have inherent morality or goodness.

I don't know if God exists but I choose to treat others well regardless of this fact and that is more sincere than someone "checking boxes" to get to heaven.

You see it all the time with Christians, ex convicts who became born again in prison. My mentality is to just not go to prison in the first place or need to "find God" or religion.

Of course society is fuked and there are bad people. That's pretty obvious. Maybe religion does play it's role in governance. My point is I don't need religion to govern my actions.

First and foremost, you are upholding Christianity as though that is the only religion. I will go by what my religion preaches and that is not the same as Christianity. We arent absolved of our sins in THIS world. We have rules and regulations. Sure god may forgive you, but if you have done wrong by someone , then there will be repercussions.

There are necessary laws to govern humans otherwise, if we all go by your logic, we will all have a different outlook on morality. How can we critique anyone for urinating on a dead body when in his mind, he isnt doing anything wrong. How can we scold or punish someone who decides to sleep with his mother? How can we look down on lying when in another persons mind he thinks theres nothing wrong in what he is doing?

God and religion bring an end to that. Sure maybe religous people may do all the above things but they will know that what they are doing is wrong. Knowing that you are being watched not only by the law but by God, it makes humans think twice. It rids people of making their own choice of morality and like i said previously, if we all decided what morality is for ourselves, wed be in a world of chaos.

TL;Dr: Morality in your world is subjective, forever changing and if we go by that, we will have a society living like animals. We need religion to check us and reign us in.

As in if people had full governance over themselves. No laws, as we make our own choice as to whats good and whats bad. The current society we live in has laws that come from the middle ages and were implemented using the bible.

Maybe you don't because you aren't a bad person, Bradley. But most of the world is bad, and driven by selfishness.

I'm like you, an agnostic. But I like the morals that you learn in a church. Having more people aware of good morals is a net positive for society.

Being kind, selfless, doing the right thing in general. Do you need church or God for this? Hell no. BUT, church does help with these things and that's good enough for me.

Some religions have arbitrary rules and practices like praying at certain times of the day or saying the rosary 50 times or eating stale bread. I just find the entire thing ridiculous.

I don't need religion to tell me that urinating on a dead body is wrong.

The only thing I use to guide my decision making process is logic and causality.

Murdering someone = end that persons life and inflict pain on their friends and family = bad

Stealing = inflicting pain on someone = bad

I don't need religion to tell me this.

I do see your point in that maybe some people do.
