I HIRED a Candidate with a criminal record

I HIRED a Candidate with a criminal record. Candidate was talented and cleared all rounds of interview. When I asked the candidate, do you have any questions? Candidate said, "Why didn’t you grill me more about my criminal record? I did 2 years in Lompoc for assault. I'll die before I go back." I simply replied, “Being on both sides of the interview process gave me a different perspective. Life happens. Once you have the skills and right attitude for the job, that’s my main focus. Someone took a chance on me and I am going to take a chance on you." I have learned over the years if you want the best talent, stop looking for perfection. It does not exist! Resumes don’t perform jobs. it’s people – so hire people and not resumes.

Why did you put hired in upper case? I’ve worked with multiple felons who were great at what they did and never had issues.

Gjdm.

People who served their time deserve a second chance (exception: rapists/child molesters/murderers). That “felon” label is a major reason why ex-criminals return to jail. When you don’t have any opportunities to re-assimilate into society, you soon find out that you have to do a lot of the same shady chit to survive.

Honestly, as much as I applaud you for having a good heart, its prob a risky move.

Not good to generalize, however, convicts and thugs have a certain type of mentality. Especially the ones I have come across. They care about themselves before anyone else and that type of behavior is very hard to eradicate. Manipulation and selfishness.
