The mutations happened long before, the UK variant for example was first found in September, it just wasn't reported on until December along with the vaccine rollout. There was no utility in them reporting on it before.

This virus is so smart. It mutates when it senses a vaccine, it doesn't affect people who are out fighting for social justice and it knows to only infect you if you're maskless when you enter or exit a restaurant, but not when you're sitting and eating. Big brain virus confirmed.

They are mutating all the time. Natural selection is what causes variants which are more likely to be transmitted and more likely to side step immunity to proliferate.

When they talk about specific mutations, they have seen examples are sufficiently different from what was studied before to be given a different label. But it's actually a continuous process.

My memory is foggy on this but our immune systems *depend* upon mutations to kill of viruses and other pathogens. Something about immune cells reproducing, mutating, and dying (in the thymus?) until an antibody is found that works against the virus, then that replicates and spreads throughout your lymph system. I think that's why there's a delay from initial infection until you start to win against the virus. Its like a brute force hack (where you try every possible combination), except powered by random mutations. Anyone know more about this that can clear this up?
