Why are talented movie critics terrible at making movies?

I enjoy the commentaries of guys like Red Letter Media and B Movie Mania on crummy movies. They really do seem to identify why the movie is crummy. Their own review shows are very fun and entertaining.

Then they make their own movies. Space Cop and Late Afternoon of the Living Dead come to mind. Those movies made by those same critics aren’t really amazing in my opinion.

Why is it that relatively brilliant critics can’t seem to make movies better than those they (correctly) criticize?

I've always wanted movie critics to get together with Hollywood and make one fantastic movie to see if they could actually produce something of value. I feel like it's so easy to complain about stuff when they haven't done them themselves. Like yeah, some stories are entirely corny and predictable, but the value and entertainment to the basic ass viewer like myself might like it.

If you've been watching RLM long enough to get a feel for what they do, you'd know Space Cop ismeantto be a terrible B Movie. I mean, that's their entire thing.

It is still not very good. Blazing saddles is a good parody movie. Space Cop just isn’t. I know what RLM does. They just didn’t do it well with that movie, I think.

I think the $1000 budget might have something to do with it.

Honestly, I'd rather throw their 2 hour review of Episode 1 on the TV before I'd rewatch Episode 1 again. (ded fckin srs)

Agree. Filmmakers either have it or they don't.

Watched Youtube's most popular critic (Chris Stuckmann's) "Notes from Melanie" short yesterday and he clearly doesn't have it.

In contrast, look at some of the popular debuts in horror on shoestring budgets...

Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez (The Blair Witch Project), Oren Peli (Paranormal Activity) etc. Real talent.

Because creating high level art is extremely difficult. Try simply writing a 90 page script worth producing and tell me it isn't soul sucking. Making the damn movie is even gnarlier. All of the best directors are dictators on the set for a reason.
