Powerlifting = decent physique? Reps 4 answers

Sup brahs, long time no see

I'm not trying to be a powerlifter, but I find doing squats, bench and deads the most fun. Can I just do these and do some bicep curls / shrugs / rows / pulldowns and get a decent physique? Or will my physique look retarded if I keep at it for too long?
390 back squat
285 bench press
500 deadlift (I don't DL anymore)

You don't run into time constraints? If I do squat/bench/deads every workout (3x a week for instance) its kinda hard to fit in a whole lot more each time.

Not sure if it's ever been recommended before, but I think you'll be ok doing big lifts with some isolation work in there.

Tell your your grandchildren I was the one who set you on the right path.

Yeah. But I'm not talking about a PPL or some "big lifts is the core" type of workout. I'm talking about putting almost all of my efforts into those lifts, and realistically only giving 10% of time to anything else. So for anterior upper body its only bench + curls (and shrugs). So no shoulder work, no tricep work, no abs.

you wont look like apower lifter without eating like one if you eat the right amount then youll stay lean if thats what your looking for its more to do with diet and what you wanna look like

Honestly I don't think the details of the program matter much. Just show up regularly, try hard, keep diet on track and keep it up for a sustained period of time.

Yes I get it, diet = fat percentage. But I'm wondering if the growth from powerlifting-training will tend towards asymmetrical, or if the differences between a powerlifting vs bodybuilding routine in terms of muscle growth will be minimal.

You signed up here almost 10 years ago. Based on your numbers you have in your sig, you outlift at least 95% of the misc. Just do whatever keeps you motivated to keep doing it, no matter what it is. Consistency is the only thing that matters.

I don't get it. Its as if I asked the most r3tarded question ever asked.

There is a difference between only doing squats for the rest of my life and only doing biceps curls - my physique will differ. If we can accept that premise, you'd think doing only powerlifting would run the risk of creating a somewhat asymmetrical physique. Consistency is obviously a big part of the equation, in fact being consistent would be absolutely necessary to incur the differences I'm worrying about. Most people are doing a brosplit, PPL or upper/lower - and powerlifters generally don't give a fuk about symmetry.

But allright, I guess what you do in the gym just doesn't matter.

Like I said...You have the lower body and you have no upper body, you got a problem building...wait a minute. You have the upper body, and you have no legs, you got a problem building your legs. You have the upper...you have the lower body and you don't have the upper body, the upper body, it is easier to build. So if you have the lower body and you don't have the upper body, it is easier to build the upper body. You have the upper body and you don't have the legs, you got a problem building the lower body... No, you don't understand. You have the upper body, but you don't have the lower body, you got a problem building downstairs. You got the up- legs on the bottom, it is easier to build on the top.
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16)

Ofc you can op. Only diff between PLing and BBing in the natty realm is accessories like curls.. lateral raises.. maybe leg curls etc.

I like you, love squats and deads etc.. I got a decent physique.

PLing is bad for physique development. Greats a poor balance in body, usually with a thick core, glutes, legs and partially chest, with bad arms.

PL movements are also very fatiguing for how much gain you get (especially deadlift).

Machines on the other hand give you a great stimulus to fatigue ratio.

It will depend a bit on your body type. But it is unlikely to develop very good aesthetics.

I did similar programs as you suggest for a couple of years starting out. Ended up with massive thighs & ass, deep chest. But lacking in arms, shoulders & okayish lats. So the look is a bit bottom heavy/blocky for aesthetics, which is all about wide shoulders (more back work & then cap with lateral delts), narrow waist (not generally synonymous with big deads or squats, especially if using a belt to generate stability by working those abs pushing against the belt... it'll thicken the middle) & bigger arms.

Will you look like you lift? yes. Will you look strong? yes. Will it look retarded- depends a bit on your genes. Possible pear shape if all your growth is in legs. Possible blocky with muscles if you are lucky. Will not be v shape type body though.

Why exactly are you asking a forum full of <200lb people for lifting advice? Lol

Really is not rocket science. Do your heavy powerlifting movements (bench, squat, dead) at the start of your workouts then do the rest of the workout like a normal bodybuilder would

You'll look fine, if that's what you enjoy then you'll be consistent and work hard.

Make sure you do a lot of arms work, and lateral raises. Work on your pullups strength too and do rows

Do not ignore diet and do NOT GET FAT to put on some strength, strength takes time and you don't need to get fat.

Have fun and don't overthink things too much
