Think stock go up, buy stock.

Think stock go down, short stock.

Short stock, borrow share from you when stock at $10 per share, sell borrowed share immediately, then give you back a stock when at $1 per share.

If instead, short stock and goes to $20 per share, still have to return stock.

When you sell short you go negative in shares, like -5 GME. You immediately get the procedes of the sale, then you owe your broker those 5 shares. So at some point you have to buy 5 shares to get rid of your -5 shares so you're even with your broker. You can probably figure out the rest (like sell high, then buy low)
