Explain Why My Power Steering is Like This

Couple months back, notice power steering whine on cold mornings after I start the car for a couple seconds. Refilling with new fluid didn't solve the problem.

Today: Drove in the morning fine, usual startup whine. Started car in the afternoon to run an errand. Power steering is kill. Look under car, big puddle (never had leaks before).

Judging from the fact it was whining before I'd say your power steering pump completely bit the dust. What type of vehicle? They're usually not hard to replace yourself and all you need to replace it is a socket set and possibly a pry bar. I've done it on a couple different vehicles

-Put a new piece of cardboard under the vehicle where the pump/hose is (to catch any leaking fluids
-Refill and crank up, then turn the wheel a few times, let run a few minutes
-Leave on but look under car for leaks
-If you find one, Try to trace where the leak is coming from. Its probably going to be a dry rotted/busted hose, maybe a busted/broken seal. If so, easy fix.
-If its not in the hose/seals, then its probably in the steering rack or bellows. Harder to detect.
-If its the rack pump, then you'll want to have a conversation with your mechanic.

If it were the pump, then you'd never get power steering back.

Bad CV joint would give you a bumpy ride, rough turning/steering, hella greese on the tires, knocking etc.

I don't know much about car repair but my first though was power steering pump failure. The bros that said cracked hose might be right though.

OP if you can't figure it out maybe have a real mechanic check it out. Try not to get shafted on the deal.
I have sampled every language and French is my favorite to curse in.

Also, if the power steering pump is bad, the car CAN make a whining sound when you crank up. but not always

Most likely new rack, seals have probably gone.


Not a difficult job, access is always bad, especially if doing on the ground.
I can only please one person per day, today is not your day and tomorrow doesn't look good either.

Your Power steering pump is probably shot, or you need a new hose.

Literally can crawl under the vehicle and see where the leak is coming from.
