OIL PAINTING - Check out my 2 year painting progress

A few days ago marked 2 years since I first ever tried oil painting. I thought it would be interesting, much like I did last year, to re-paint the first painting I ever tried to paint. Here is the progress. It's really interesting to see how much evolution took place in the past 2 years. I think this one was my 81st painting I made.

Any feedback as to what I can continue working on or which particular aspect of the painting I need to keep working on developing? It would be a good goal for the next year.

The one I made this week is obviously the Feb 2021 version.

All of this to say that, if you ever had any desire to paint, do it. Let this thread be proof that an old dog can indeed learn new tricks and that you don't need any special innate 'talent' to paint. As Bob Ross said, talent is a pursued interest. If something interests you enough, and you're willing to dedicate some time to it, then you'll improve.

Holy fuark. That looks amazing dude, good job.

I am not into art, so I can't give any feedback, but your progress is insane and the painting is gorgeous.

Great job bro, what do you use for your oil paint? Ive messed with thin on thick, takes a few painting to get the hang of thinning the paint properly. Bob Ross was onto something when he said "you have to make the sounds" lol. Your making me want to bust out the painting supplies and go to town.

Edit: had a picture of one of my painting

Do you scrape your canvas and reuse or do you just keep buying them? How many do you have stacked up? The wife and I did like 12ish painting and they are all over the place still.

Definitely stick to landscapes. I don't have much of a desire to paint people or animals. That's an entire process in and of itself. I'd rather just focus on landscapes.

Really nice man.
Have you ever considered trying a more 'impressionist' style? I think with your dedication and talent you could nail it, and I believe the end results are far nicer than hard realistic style.
You basically do more with less brush strokes.

Nice stuff man. Did you follow along with Bob?

I use a variety of oil paints depending on what they have at my local art store. It's mostly van gogh or windsor newton brand.

It's not necessarily Bob Ross's style. Ala prima has been around for centuries and it was popularized by Bill Alexander on his painting show that predated The Joy of Painting. I also watched pretty much every episode of Bill's show and he has his own technique going.

I just always wanted to paint landscapes and painting other things really doesn't interest me at all. It's very rewarding to see something while out in nature and finally be able to recreate it on canvas.

I didn't like them either. For the sake of this painting, I wanted to really follow along with the episode, but I don't particularly like Bob's clouds here. I added a bit more on the right that I then covered with the big tree.
