Investing with RealLifeAlpha

Sup bros

Creating this thread as sort of an open investing log to hold myself accountable to my goals (1mill in my TD account by 2025) and also as a reference to some folks who PM me asking questions about investing. I will share my investments and thoughts on the companies I invest in and am thinking about investing in.

Why you should listen to me:

You shouldn’t -- it’s your money, do what you want with it.

But I hope at the very least you will consider investing. Diligently and consistently investing over time is one of the easiest ways to become wealthy. You don’t necessarily need to make a ton of money at your day job to invest (although it helps), but if you can put as much money as you can afford to into the market year after year (without withdrawing money from the market or using it like a piggy bank), you will be shocked at how quickly your money grows.

Think about it this way . . . if you have 100k in the market, and your portfolio does 1.5% in a day (or a year), thats +$1,500….. great! Now over the years lets say this sum grows to $450k, and it does 1.5% in a given day. That’s $6,750. Compounding interest is a great snowball effect.

I started investing 11 years ago, but really started paying attention to the markets and “picking stocks” 5 years ago. I have $600k in a UBS account that I let a financial advisor manage (boring stuff, index funds, etc.), but what I focus on and enjoy most is managing my own portfolio in a TD account, where I focus primarily on low-ish cap high growth tech stocks. I started the account with $110k in 2019, and today it is sitting at $430k. This includes doing very stupid **** like withdrawing $60k from it to buy a BMW (ded fkn Srs). My goal is to grow this account to 1mm by the end of 2024, and you can follow my progress here.

My strategy:

I pay attention to the types of companies and industries I know -- and that is primarily tech stocks, because I work in tech sales. After working in tech for 9 years, I've made a lot of friends, have talked to a lot of customers, etc; so I get to keep up to date on which pieces of software all of the big blue-chip companies are using, which new startups look promising from a product perspective, which software services companies are migrating to and which software services companies are ditching; and so now I base a lot of my investing around that information flow and those relationships. I have contacts at companies like Oracle, salesforce, Microsoft, LinkedIn, Servicenow, Google, AWS, Gartner, and Slack. If I can find patterns in new service providers these very successful companies are adopting, that will be my first clue to a potentially great investment opportunity.Do you have friends or network you can leverage in a similar way?

Some core investing beliefs:

-I’m not a “trader”, I don’t buy and sell stocks, I don’t **** with options, I buy and hold for the long term. I invest in good companies that I believe have a very long and bright future ahead, and therefore I don’t have to worry about selling anytime soon. It makes investing way less stressful this way.
-Never invest money you cant afford to lose
-Understand that volatility (stocks going up and down) is the price of admission. There were a few stocks that I took initial losses on, and are now up over 200% on because I didn't freak out and because I believe in the company
-Think of investing with a long term mindset (who cares what the stock price does today, or even next month, if you're picking the right companies that you believe in, you're in this for the next 20+ yrs)
-’Time in the market’ is better than ‘timing the market’. Nobody can time the market. Stop sitting on the sidelines “waiting for the right time” to invest. You’re probably going to be wrong.
-Don’t mess with options -- they’re basically lotto tickets.
-Contribute to a 401k if your company offers it -- especially if they do ANY type of matching. If you don’t you’re basically leaving free money on the table. I contribute 10% of every paycheck to my 401k, and don’t even think about it. By the time I’m 60 it’ll be worth around 2.5mill

I don't know I'll live that long, but if I die suddenly, at least some family members of mine will be able to enjoy my money. The amount I'm investing in my 401k on a bi-weekly basis isn't enough to affect my quality of life. After a couple months of the money automatically being routed into your 401k, you totally forget about it.

Hope you meet your goal, boyo. Do you consider things like P/E ratios when buying, especially when they tend to be higher for tech stocks?

as for BB -- i invested in BB (small amount) in 2018, when i started to learn more about them pivoting their business towards IoT, as they obviously have zero utility as a phone manufacturer any more. The more research I did the more I felt that this was a great opportunity. My only problem was I was impatient with the stocks performance, and sold at a loss 9 months ago. If I had just listened to my own advice about thinking long term and not letting the short term dictate my actions, I would be up 150% on BB today -- proof below lol:

While I think BB definitely has some major upside I am scared to touch it now because it has become a meme stock like GME, AMC, etc. (ded fkn Srs)

TSLA is one of those stocks that has really pissed me off, because I always have this dumb feeling like I missed the boat on it, yet it continues to soar YoY. I hope it works out for you -- Elon is definitely one of the GOATs

Right now my HT is sort of in that annoying shock-loss phase, where believe it or not, my hairline is even worse than pre-surgery. This is pretty normal obviously, as I am only 2 months out post-operation. I will post some progress pics in maybe a couple of months, as my surgeon says that around month 5 you start to see a good amount of "baby hairs" growing in, and obviously the final product isn't done until around 12-16 months

A young bull and an old bull were standing atop a hill looking at a bunch of heifers in a field below.

The young bull says "Let's run down this hill and fuk one of those heifers."

The old bull replies "No. Let's walk down there, and fuk them all."

What the OP is doing is investing for the future and his kids if he has any. There is nothing wrong with that and this will ensure that each subsequent generation is richer and well-off. Coupled with a proper education and I bet his 1 million could become 10 million after a few generations.

Sadly many people don't do this and they end up crying the rich get richer because they never bothered to think about their children and or the future.

You're doing what the government wants you to do and that is spending your money today and not worrying about the future. You'll get a meager old age security check in the future whilst Op can enjoy life to the fullest when he's older.

For the Op: Good job, I hope your investments pay off well. I've got about 11k invested and now it's worth 13 200$. I'd put in more but the remaining 14 500$ in my chequings is being saved up for a house. I've mainly invested in REIT's, Banks, Oil and gas companies, utility stocks and insurance companies. I'm not as aggressive as you are but I'm sure if I had put some of my money into tech stocks I'd have made a bit more money. I'm mainly after dividends. Right now I make close to 670$ per year from dividends and my end goal is to make 4-5k a month from dividends. But for right now If I can make 1000$ a year I'd be happy. Plus I wanna make sure my kids get to benefit from my investments someday.

I usually reinvest the dividends I get and each two weeks I'll transfer money from my chequings so that the number is rounded after receiving my government assistance check since I lost my job. Ex: Initial balance 14050+900=14950 (I'll transfer 50$ into the investment account) 50+the dividends I got that month and I'll buy more stocks. I'd put in more but being out of work due to covid means that my income is significantly lower. But I do get to buy stocks twice a month so its not that bad. Best of lucks Op.

GJ op ded srs but if you just started picking stocks a few years back you've been doing it exclusively in one of the easiest market periods in history, especially for tech stocks. Just be aware of that.

Again good job though, that's impressive even in a good market.

Good advice overall, I do the same thing except without regularly scheduled deposits, I just do it manually from time to time.

However I could never give up doing options, always keep some cash in the account for that. Nothing makes my dikk hard like seeing a 2-400% gain in the span of 3 weeks on a good option play. Feels way better than any slow stock gain imo, but generally not advisable as a primary strategy.

There's a reason why only 1% of the population is in the 1%. If it was as easy as you are making it out to be everyone would be rich.

Good luck investing your welfare check but many many people lose money in the market. Right now everything is up but it's not going to stay that way.

As much as you can afford to. Im assuming you are using the term "stocks" loosely as retirement/investment accounts.

absolutely -- it's very easy for people to look like geniuses in a bull market.

in my opinion however, what makes most of these companies appealing is that "digital transformation" (cringe buzzword) is not going anywhere. adoption of cloud software and ancillary product niches are proliferating, ESPECIALLY due to COVID19 which is going to change the way the world works forever.

For example -- I sell HR Software. Right now I am currently in the middle of selling my software to Deloitte (the largest consulting firm in the world). Key players in their HR org have shared with me that they need more consultants right now than ever before, because the demand for large enterprise software installs and consults for products likeWorkday, Servicenow, Salesforce, Amazon Web Services, SAP, Crowdstrike, etc.is at an all time high.

With increasingly distributed workforces, companies are becoming more reliant on technology, and this is a trend I don't see reversing itself any time soon

What happens when you want to take everything out? Can you just hold it in an account not invested in anything?

Someone explained to me once that if I held off on buying a new car and making monthly car payments, and investing that into stocks / index funds / mutual funds, thats all it would take.

So ive been doing just that since. Still driving the same paid off car, 2013 ford.
pls do not associate my personalities in misc and sports misc

Yes, its really just a bank/clearing house. A place to hold your money. When you are out, it will place the money in some sort of money market account (like cash) which is your piggy bank to hold and use in the market or you can transfer that money bank into your bank account for use. Takes a few days for the transfer.

Could you share how you calculate your exit points? This more than anything else has cost me monumentally (exiting too early-literally has cost me over 150k)

Yes & no -- P/E ratios don't seem to necessarily translate into market performance for many of these companies (tech) (ded fkn Srs)

if i was trying to be a a value investor like warren buffett i'd probably pay closer attention to PE
