40 pennies = 1 dollar
if you were to melt the copper from pre 1982 pennies and sell it for spot right now
at $4.04 per pound each penny has a melt value of $0.026 equals about 38 and a half pennies for $1
a little less than 20% of pennies in circulation are from pre 1982
so with the value of 20 pennies out of every 100 pennies being equal to 20 * $0.026 melt value = $0.52 + the 80 other pennies left over you didnt melt and sell == $0.52 + $0.80 = $1.32
so if you start with a dollar of pennies you end with $1.32 but its illegal
