Rusted 45lbs plates - how to restore them? What paint to use?

Found some old 45lbs plates leaning outside a dumpster (wtf lol) but they need a paint job at the least. Is there a specific paint I need to use for the cast iron?

Use something to scrap the rust off.
Put a layer of oil on the plate and heat it in an oven for a couple of hours.
Take it out and leave it cool.
Spray paint it once it's cooled down. (Optional, it'll probably make them sticky to handle so I'd leave them once a layer of oil has been applied and heated)

Use heavy industrial lead-based paint to add another 2lbs to each plate. Re-paint every week for progressive overload

I got a 20-120lb prostyle set for $50 from a local HS when they bought new gym equipment

The stupid fukks had left them out in the rain for a year so I had to use a wire brush on my grinder to clean them all up. Didn't bother repainting and they look fine 5 years later

This. Buy a wire brush and some sand paper at the hardware store.
Sand and wire brush them before painting.
1/2 pint can of rustoleum is more than enough to do the job .
Cost about 10 bucks.

vinegar will get the rust off. let it soak for 24 hours then wipe down. Use a wirebrush drill attachment for anything that is left. Soak in vinegar again if you want.

Not sure on paint.

Put the plate in a tub of water for a day or two to soften the surface rust.

Then use one of these to remove the rust.

Honestly with iron plates he could get away with spraying them down with like olive oil or Canola and baking them at like 350 for 2 hours to season them and it won't rust.

But yeah otherwise I would recommend either sandblaster wire wheels to cleab em followed by acetone

Painting is all about prep work. Vinegar bath is super effective for cleaning. Also gets to places and deep pore surfaces wire brush can’t, and it’s WAAY easier than wire brush. Don’t even bother with sandpaper, waste of time and effort. Can always hit any stubborn areas after the soak with wire wheel / brush.

Grind off the rust with a wire wheel or use a sand blaster.. and use an enamel spray paint.

Make sure you use enamel or the paint will just chip off
