Might give my 2 weeks tomorrow...Story time Srs
I've been at my current job for about 10 years right now.
In December I transfered to a different location. I transfered in part to move back home.
Since transferring, I've been working for a boss and at a location that is absolutely soul sucking. I've been absolutely miserable.
I've tried to talk to my boss. And even spoke to HER boss.
Same lip service.
My departments have consistently, for years, been at the top in the district and many times top 20 in the entire company.
My departments have always exceeded company expectations for sales growth and comp. This is at multiple locations.
I've been overlooked for promotions over and over, and I feel in part it's due to the fact I missed 1 1/2 years to go through cancer treatment. And also due to the fact that I do SO well, my bosses don't want to lose me through promotions.
My mother is 63, works 7 days a week doing residential cleaning [her own company] she's at the point where her knees are so bad she has issues walking.
She's mentioned several times that she hopes either I or my brother's will take over the company due to how much she makes.
I'd like to quit my job and help my mom with her work.
I'd be taking a pay decrease, but might feel more satisfaction helping my own mom as opposed to working for a company that would replace me in a minute if I quit.
Thoughts?

If you don't like it, leave and find something else. This is something that people somehow don't seem to understand. Your girlfriend is a dumb sloot or an abusive Chad, leave them. You don't like your job and can find another, do it.
I took a supervisor position at my work and someone asked "what if you don't like it"? I bertstared them and said "then I'll stop doing it" and they bertstared back like they never thought of that.
People fall into their routines and go on autopilot. Time seems to go faster for you as you age because you just repeat the same senseless actions over and over without any conscious mindfulness. Hopping jobs has always netted me 10-50% more income and a fresh start lets you work on avoiding past mistakes.

But have been at the same level of management for the last 4-5 years.
I'm currently maxed in terms of compensation, so without that next jump in promotion, I can't make much more money.

Sounds like if they offer you something better you're going to be in the same boat as you are now, or worse. But you have a backup plan and it's a solid one. Might not be as sexy but might be the way to go. Trust your gut.

Put your two weeks in, and see what they do. If they value you, they will make a counter-offer, if they don't then they never gave a fuk about you (provided what you said is true). The only issue is their offer would be countering a lower position. If you were cool with working for your mom and taking over that company, then great, but if it's not what you "want to do" then Idk.
I put my two weeks in after getting passed over for a promotion, and I ended up not getting "promoted" but got a raise that exceeded what my promotion would have been. There was two many people log jammed at the next level. So when I do get promoted, which is likely this year, my raise will be even more than what it would have been.

I know we all go to work to make money, but at the same time there is a value to what it pays vs. what it cost. If a job pays more, but you are miserable, it better pay enough to make up for that misery.

Do help your mom. Don't feel that you must keep the family business going to make her happy. Life is too short.
If your mom wants out of it/can't keep it up you might consider selling the business. Maybe you could help her get it straightened out so that it could be an appealing purchase for, say a foreigner who wants an easy in to the US.
Proceeds from the sale could be invested for her retirement (maybe an annuity + some growth type investments).

Even if they give you more money you’ll still be unhappy dealing with the BS of the environment, and probably dealing with more of it. You don’t have to give out numbers, but what type of pay difference are you talking about? If you can live comfortably while helping your mom you should probably go that route. And later on after your mom passes you can always change direction at that point and would probably end up making more than you are in your current position.
Edit to add - even if they offer you more money you’d still feel guilty seeing your mom work every day at her age

1. Why would I promote you if you are SO GOOD at your job, I would rather keep you working hard and delivering results than having to look for a replacement who probably wont be as good
2. Getting a promotion to higher up Management positions is not about how good you are as a worker but how good u are as a manager of people and resources - different skill set tbh
3. You are just a number at your company, u dont owe them anything, they dont owe u anything. HR departments spread propaganda about how u are part of a family but dont eat it

+1 on the HR propaganda bs. I see it. I ate it for a while. But my stomach can't digest it anymore.

Maybe u were never prepared for the next level, srs, the highest level positions of sales / marketing are not really about actually selling or marketing a product, they are more about vision and resource allocation
