IMO: there are two kinds of people, but - should there be one?

There are lots of ways to dissect and examine the world, but hear me out.

The two kinds of people are as follows:

1) Individualistic people, 'me' or 'I' personalities. Lone wolfs, self sufficient brahs, etc
2) Group people, 'we' personalities. Socially oriented, communal, etc.

As advanced monkeys, we are naturally a group species, we do not thrive on our own, and we wouldn't be here now if it weren't for the miracle of large group cooperation. However, I see many people with a mindset defined by liberty and autonomy, myself included, which has been around for a while and doesn't immediately raise any alarms like 'ohhh, this person is clearly sick/mentally damaged/whatever' because it's common for people to speak about escaping to the country, or the woods, to live out a peaceful existence free from politics and all the other crazy chit.

That being said, there is a disconnect these days between the political parties (in the US), which align themselves in different ways between these two groups, and it would seem there is an attempt to squash out individual thinkers. Of course if possible, I think either party would gladly eliminate the other if it meant a consolidation of power, but for the sake of the discussion, lets say the left is hell bent on capturing the mind of every individual because they are convinced that acting as a unit, to align and direct the actions of all individuals, would be best for the whole. Agree or disagree?

In other words: given the state of globalization and the increasing interconnectedness of all human life, are we better off being segmented and letting natural competition create the best solution? Or is this competitive gameplay becoming antiquated and increasingly dangerous as we disregard the externalities imposed on others?

I think it's going to be hard for a constantly globalizing society to reconcile these differences among others, like separate cultures. The sense of community is already long gone for many people, other than maybe close family.

We're a bunch of apes arguing on twitter and feeling community through chaos now, or depressed from deprivation.

I firmly believe that balance is the answer to everything. So I wholly disagree that any sort of unity could ever actually be beneficial.

Actually, I disagree with your main assertion.

There is an opposition between individualism and cooperation, but that opposition is betweenideals.Human beings actually strive for balance between opposing ideals. Since you've brought US political parties into the discussion, they are the perfect illustration of this: in very broad strokes, one side shills for economic individualism and social cooperation while the other for economic cooperation and social individualism.

The increasing level of international cooperation will upset that balance, indeed, but will naturally lead to more individualism in other areas. You can already see it in the economic sphere: greater degree of economic interconnectedness has resulted in more, not less, competition between companies and goods as they no longer operate on isolated home markets.

Yea man, good!

I like this assessment. Can you spell this bolded part out for me? Democrats are for economic individualism and social cooperation, and republicans are for economic cooperation and social individualism?

If we expand this thinking into the future, do you suppose that we'll never achieve some form of unification? In the OP, I suggested that it might be preferable, but personally I'd be terrified of it.

Tl, dr: democrats are for economic cooperation (social programs, minimum wage laws, etc...) and social individualism (gay rights, abortion rights, lenient police, etc...) while republicans are more or less the mirror image.

That was a really popular point of view following the fall of the USSR (end of history and all that jazz), but not sure I buy it personally. I don't think we'll ever fully understand human nature, so there will always be some conflict between ideologies... or in any case I hope so, but who knows.
