Admittedly, my disappointment comes mainly from Computer Science corporate life in general, but a very nice route got mucked up by the GOV really bad.

Basically, instead of being a permanent employee at a firm, you can be a contractor (for yourself, not as part of a consultancy) and:

-- Pros

- You get paid much more
- You pay little tax (compared to a permanent earning the same amount)
- You get more varied work as your contract can last less than a year

^The last one strikes home so bad because in Computer Science you need to constantly update your skills and it is easy to get pigeonholed into a specific stream (Android dev vs say Cyber Security).

-- Cons

- You do not contribute to National Insurance (healthcare, pension)
- You do not get sick leave unlike a permanent employee
- You can be let go without serious notice
- You do not get a full holiday allowance

^Now, if you explore the cost of decent private healthcare and income insurance the above cons seem like pros, even for the GOV (not a burden on it) and the client (the company can drop you if you are a slacker).

GOV introduced legislation to force employers to cut the contracts of contractors who are basically "permanents in disguise" or to make them permanent.

Consultancies (Big 4 Audit, and Big 3 Management) also lobbied for this because they protect their revenue streams and partners pocket everything and consultant employees get a trickle-down of urine.


Combine that with today getting emails about 50/50 diversity Director and above targets (because we all know that force hiring through discriminatory characteristics is good as long as males do not benefit).

God, I have multiple options in my face to change to options that are more vocational (doctor, lawyer, teacher at an international school) and I might just do a complete 180 and do that.
