Is saving $20k+/yr worth living with the family?

Moved out of the nest at 18 for college, and had been on my own ever since... in random roommate situations, friend roommate situations, living alone some times, and more recently living with GF. Due to the GF's work/school, as well as some relationship reasonings, we're gonna be living separately for a while.

Family has a house with a spare bedroom, they live too far away from my work office (1.5 hours) but I've been working remote since COVID so it's currently a non-issue.

I have a good relationship with my family, though they're loud, and I don't like living under rules haha. I'm 25.

Was thinking if I lived with the family I'd save $20k+ due to no rent, and reduced bills. Though I'd still help out with some financial compensation to not be a burden.

I don't have a clear need for +$20k/yr of savings, though I'd like to get a down payment on a house eventually in my later 20's / early 30's. But I'm not in a hurry for that, until I feel confident I know where I want to live for a longer term. Currently putting all my excess money into both retirement and non-retirement investment accounts.

One other concern is I now possess furniture which I'd have to sell/dispose/store.

Thoughts misc? What's it like living with your family in your twenties?

The only drawback is if you go back to office mode...a 3hr daily commute?! yikes

Everyone's family situation is unique. If you like them and can tolerate living with them without it ruining your relationship it's fine, but obviously living alone has it's perks. If saving money is your ultimate goal than yes, it's always cheaper to live for free than it is to pay. Also nothing stops your from moving out whenever you want if you're living at home versus being locked into a lease if you rent elsewhere. IMO as an adult you should pay your parents at least some money in rent for food and utilities once you moving back in and are a grown person who has some money.

Right.

I have some coworkers who used to have special privileges because they happened to live far away from the corporate office, where they'd only come in once a week or something. Could maybe try to strike a deal, if it came to that. But currently the unforeseeable future is looking remote.

As a young buck yes and up until about 25 at the oldest.

After that the financial gain wouldn't be enough to offset the effects of your social life etc.

Do it temporarily but not long term
Im 27 and have been living a lone for years

Planning on heading back home for the spring / summer but plan to be out again after summer.

I know It won't be as fun and free as im used to but hey its only temporarily and good chance to stack money

And no im not moving back due to lack of $

Im moving back because I had to let my last place go because it was ghetto and had roaches

Now been subletting a really nice place from a friend ..but he's coming back soon so I literally have no where else to go..but still have plenty $

So yeah im gonna stack up some money and get thru . Only thing that saves me a bit is that my parents will probably be down at their cottage atleast half the week when the weather is good

Depending on your goals, yeah it totally can be. You could save up for a down payment on a house and then rent rooms out when you buy one

Lived alone or w my best friend for many years. Living with my mom now for about a year - I’m 26 I own one investment property about to buy another.

I think it is worth it (I have a long term GF, if I was single it could hinder sex life) lots of 20 something living at home through Covid so likely girls you meet are also at home making smashing tough.

Just turned 26 today and living at home. Parents need their space man (even if they don't say anything). Have more $$ saved up but there are still cons of course--plan on moving out this year

Yeah the fun idea would be to pay something small monthly, like $500 or perhaps a bit more, to help out with groceries / bills. Due to that savings might be closer to, say, $15k/yr.

Somethings to consider:

If money wasn’t an issue...

Is living with your family making your life better or worse?

Are they loud?

Do they annoy the chit out of you?

Do they always ask you to fix things?

Do they make rules around the house that make your life chitty?

Is it hindering your sex life?

Do they always count you in for meals?

If they do, do they cook u healthy/bad food?

I chose to move out last and spend around $20K in rent a year and have zero regrets. I’ll pay more than $20K a year for peace of mind and my own space.
You listed some things that are actual concerns. They cook unhealthy food. Sex life would be bad. GF would get mad since I'd live further away. They're loud, but thankfully not during my working hours. They'd ask me to help with technology issues/troubleshooting on a near daily basis. They might have ground rules that I'd have to abide.

Got some good points there. GF would be pissed if I moved.

One argument is that socializing is discouraged/non-existent with COVID these days anyways haha.

Yeah, the "$20k/yr" is just to put it into perspective, might actually look like 6 months for example, so $10k. Would want it to be long enough to justify the BS of moving and figuring out what to do with my furniture lol.

lived on and off with my parents till about 25, I think it's okay just to get some financial runway with the goal being to live comfortably independently. Past 28 you should probably have your chit together and move out.

probably pretty good for the modern computer geek. for someone like me (strong alpha male) its not worth it but the forces of economics/socioeconomics made me anyways. felt a huge lack of freedom and no self respect or dignity. i felt degraded and undignified greatly by the system.
ifyou can make moneyyoushould be using it to better your life otherwise your wasting your time oryour****ing up not making enough money.
personally i never had much control over moving out and working. ifyouhave good enough surroundings you'll be able to do whats right for you without giving it too much thought anyways

I'd say yes. Got kicked out by dad when I turned 18.

Now mom has cancer, they thought she wasn't gonna make it. Now they're saying she might have 8 years left. And once again I live about 20 hours away from her.

Wish I had more time with her.

Cherish your family op.

Somewhere around $100-120 a month if I did it at a storage locker. However my family offered to let me use their garage for some of it, or perhaps all of it if it could fit.

Depends on your family. I lived at home for a long time while I saved and it was dope, my parents are cool. Gf slept over regularly friends were always over it was just a good atmosphere. I smoked weed and drank with my parents so it was really just a no rules situation in terms of living which was great. I had my own room and bathroom/shower and it was a big house with a nice backyard and patio. Then got my house with my gf.

If you have strict or annoying parents then maybe it's not worth it lol. If mine were I would have moved out. I moved out at 18 thinking it would be awesome and it sucked ass and I lived broke af for a couple years before going back home. I lived with some friends like a mile away so I was like this is ****in dumb lol.

Being able to save 20k is alot though and Def a great opportunity. Having money to invest or in the bank is a great feeling.
