Short men are MORE likely to go bald prematurely, say scientists

Brutal. Not only are short height and balding associated, but also heart disease and prostate cancer.
https://www.thesun.co.uk/living/3040...ay-scientists/

NO HEAD FOR HEIGHTSShort men are MORE likely to go bald prematurely, say scientists

Being short and having pale skin increase a man's chance of premature hair loss

SHORT men are more likely to bald prematurely, a study found.

Scientists compared the genes of 11,000 bald blokes with 12,000 with no hair loss.

Short men are much more likely to go bald prematurely, scientists have warned

They identified 63 genetic differences linked to early balding – and some were also connected to other physical characteristics and illnesses.

It was previously known than men with premature hair loss are more likely to suffer from heart disease and prostate cancer.

Now researchers from the University of Bonn, in Germany, have linked it to height, pale skin colour and increased bone density too.

Study leader Dr Stefanie Heilmann-Heimbach said: “We were able to identify 63 alterations in the human genome that increase the risk of premature hair loss.

“Some of these alterations were also found in connection with other characteristics and illnesses, such as reduced body size, earlier occurrence of puberty and various cancers.

“However, men with premature hair loss do not need to be concerned.

“The risks of illness are only increased slightly.

“It is, however, exciting to see that hair loss is by no means an isolated characteristic, but instead displays various relationships with other characteristics.”

The boffins now hope to work out how these genetic differences cause the hair loss in the hope of finding a treatment.
The findings are published in the journal Nature Communications.

It comes after another team of researchers revealed a simple DNA test could soon predict which men are most likely to go bald after they identified hundreds of genes responsible for hair loss.

The team at University of Edinburgh were able to create a formula that loosely predicted the chance that a person will go bald, based on the presence or absence of these genetic markers.

And last year scientists revealed a cure for baldness could be on the horizon, after a new drug was found to restore hair growth in around four months.

Researchers at Columbia University Medical Center found 75 per cent of patients with moderate to severe alopecia showed "significant hair regrowth" after taking the drug ruxolitinib.

The discovery marks the first step towards developing a cure for male pattern baldness.

The study was conducted to evaluate one aspect of the entropy theory of aging, which hypothesizes that aging is the result of increasing disorder within the body, and which predicts that increasing mass lowers life span. The first evaluation of the impact of human size on longevity or life span in 1978, which was based on data for decreased groups of athletes and famous people in the USA, suggested that shorter, lighter men live longer than their taller, heavier counterparts. In 1990, a study of 1679 decreased men and women from the general American population supported these findings. In the present study data on the height, weight, and age at death of 373 men were obtained from records at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, San Diego, CA, USA. Men of height 175.3 cm or less lived an average of 4.95 years longer than those of height over 175.3 cm, while men of height 170.2 cm or less lived 7.46 years longer than those of at least 182.9 cm. An analysis by weight difference revealed a 7.72-year greater longevity for men of weight 63.6 kg or less compared with those of 90.9 kg or more. This corroborates earlier evidence and contradicts the popular notion that taller people are healthier. While short stature due to malnutrition or illness is undesirable, our study suggests that feeding children for maximum growth and physical development may not add to and may indeed be harmful to their long-term health and longevity.

I think, because tall people eat more, they don't live as long.

I'm not sure their lessened longevity is due to their height - it's simply a proxy. I might be wrong, but this is what I think may be the case.

It probably only seems like more shorter dudes are balding since there are more shorter dudes out there than taller dudes. And taller dudes definitely aren't immune to balding either.

i think more overall mass , = more cells = more chance of cells going wrong=more likelihood of early death

you rarely if ever see very fat, very muscular, very tall older people.................they don't make it

enjoy it while you can but humans are not designed to carry too much excess mass be it fat or muscle, your heart still has to support all that mass, your joints have to carry it and gravity will pull down on it
