About3 days ago I was online stalking an old fling of mine from 13 years ago, lives in a different state now, no mutual friends or anything. This was on ******** because her insta was on private.

And today I received a follow request from her on instagram.

This confirms that they definetly use a cookie system. If you search for people, they'll put you on that person's "recommended" list

uhh, if you didnt know.. IG's new terms last fall gave it access to your phone completely including messages, microphone, safari history as well as photos and other app data.

their tracking etc goes far beyond just cookies, e.g.https://news.northeastern.edu/2018/0...spying-on-you/is just one study

to add to what you said, I've found that the recommended list also adds ppl who's phone number you have (e.g. tinder match + texted / dated), possibly due to your contact or them searching you

It's waaaayyyy beyond cookies.

1) there are multiple examples of smart devices (televisions, etc) transmitting dats (including audio recordings) to third party companies. Match that up with a common IP and your phone would see ads related to what your TV hears

2) browser fingerprinting is coming along faster than people realize. Companies can use the configuration of your hardware and software to identity your devices without anything to do with cookies or IP addresses, and there's no simple way to mask this

3) you also have to take into account what your actual ISP is selling and doing, because unless you're on a VPN, there is no real safeguard here
