Getting a Rodeshian Ridgeback Puppy. What gender should I get?
Growing up I've only really owned female dogs. That's just the way my family was. Any thoughts?

We've had all females and got a male puppy 2 years ago. These are all GSDs. Our experience has been the male has been much, much more challenging. Though a wonderful dog still. Then our older girl passed and we got another female after this male and she has been so easy compared to our little guy. And by little guy I mean a 100lb male GSD full of muscle and balls. So I would say experienced dog owner ready for a potential challenge, try a male. Not experienced or whatever with a ridgeback, female is a much safer choice. Have friends who are ridgeback owners and have met them and they seem to be similar temperament to a GSD. Obviously every dog has their own personality, but odds are a female will be easier and a male will be more challenging. Just my 2 cents.

I grew up wanting a pure bred boxer and when the time came I saw my pups pic and told the breeder I wanted that one, regardless of sex lol.
Now she’s 8 and the sweetest puppers ever man.
I’d say just go with the one that “speaks to you” if you know what I mean.

Well this thread was a bust. The breeder said there is a big list for the males. So I'm gonna go with a female. My brother had a Rodeshian and it was an amazing dog.

You owned “female” dogs?
Why did you assume their gender?
A bigot like you shouldn’t be adopting. I’m sending this link to peta so that you get banned from getting a dog. Disgusting.

Good choice on a dog. A grew up with a Rhodesian ridgeback and was an awesome dog. Very loyal and protective of my brother and I. We spent a lot of time in the woods behind our house and camping and he was always looking after us. From snakes, to other dogs, to coyotes, and even chasing after a couple bears that were hanging too close to our campsite.

They were originally bred to hunt baboons and bait lions.
I don't much about the breed, but if the breed has a high prey drive then the females will have the higher drive which may be an issue depending on where you live.
I've only known one person who had one and it was a female and she was temperamental and could be quite aggressive.

They are lovely but their engines are just too much. Had Pointers and they were the same.
