I watched a documentary where they followed two families who were considering getting these implants for their kids (all 4 parents were deaf). They got an amazing amount of push back from their deaf friends. "His deafness is who he is. Why do you want to change that?" "Are you ashamed of your deaf kid?" It was almost like they were considering a race change operation instead of enabling them to hear.

In the end, one family decided to do it and one didn't. Since the kids don't learn to talk if they don't get it soon enough, the second parents basically sentenced him to being deaf for life.
