I see it all the time. It is just as bad as "do this degree/field if you are not sociable".


If you have been involved in business operations somehow or ****ed at least one HR chick you know that hiring requires fixed resources.

For the best opportunities, there is a lot of competition place : candidate ratio. I don't care whether academia/industry, junior/senior.

Companies need to cut candidate pools so they can use up the most on a tight pool of good candidates. Initial filtering almost always involves where you went to college, GPA and other stuff.

Sure some can have online tests and look at experience (for seniority) and give some weight to that in addition. But there are not enough resources and some people don't get a chance even on further rounds as they can't inspect **** from a CV other than experience/education/GPA.


That is why in top corporate internships, at Google or Goldman Sachs, you always see kids from Ivys with good GPA and hard degrees.

Moving to a world with no university/college in the next 20 years for our children is a conversation worth having but it is alwaysoptimalto go full house on factors you control and that is why school brand and GPA matter.

Everything matters.

A degree is required as a form of liability coverage for the hiring manager/HR. If you do some really stupid or politically incorrect chit, then they can say "but he had a degree from x" to cover their own ass.

This and taking one component to the extreme won’t do you any good either, you want to be as well-rounded as possible in an ideal world

People who focus solely on grades/GPA and the technical side while not working on their soft skills (and vice versa) are doing themselves a disservice

More importantly is to not only get education but to specialize like a mofo within your field when you are employed.

yep, he is doing it for publicity (altho no college/uni concept is not a bad concept for the future)

yes there are outliers such as developing a technology that becomes as famous as Linux in the open-source software realm

then, a lot of companies would want you but those are outliers - top 1%
