Ice or heat for injury

Which is better for full recovery, broke my hand, swell up. Not sure if to let the swell do its job or ice it. Heard that the swell is what is causing the healing by bringing in extra blood and proteins to heal my hand. On the other hand heard that ice actually reduce the swell so that fresh blood can flow in for repair.
