Went to a coin show recently looking for ancients ... and all I saw were ancient people (average age was about 50). Somehow the world went from stamps/coins/sports cards... to shoes & retro games.

Yes. Pre 1964 American coins and coins from british India. Also NZ error coins that cross my palm

Just precious metals. I dont know enough about ancient coins or why I would risk purchasing any, let alone having to try to sell again one day.

I've never been to a coin show so I can't comment.. but if you're just in coins for the precious metal value I would steer clear of ancient coins

I have some ancient Roman coins they used to pay soldiers on battle fields, and also a couple old Chinese coins. Wouldn’t say I collect coins though, bought them when I was buying some gold coins because they were cool.

Used to be a cashier, found an Indian head penny once. Also a "barber" dime. When my boss found out I was into silver he gave me 9-10 pre-64 quarters. Still got em.

It really makes you wonder. Do people really not notice a silver dime or quarter in their pocket, or did they just get that desperate.

When I was working in a cafe several years ago people would try to pay with all sorts of coins. I also would find some rare old coins. I traded people from my pocket because we only accepted US currency but it was fun to trade with them.

I have:
5 centavos from Argentina
A buffalo nickel
A chrome token from In 'n Out for one burger. Don't want to spend it because I'd rather have the coin. I think that one was a tip.
A Five Riyal note from Saudi Arabia
2 Canadian 1 cent pieces 1977 and 1964
Singapore 10 cents
Bicentennial US Silver Dollar (I used to have some 50 cent pieces but i spent them.)
A one cent piece from Canada and another that's smaller with what looks like a Badger on the tails side. Same female sculpture on the front.
A 1$ token from New York New York casino when I went in, played like 2 slots and won $60 and cashed out. I wasn't planning on staying I just went for a drive one night, didn't get back til 6am.
8 US pennies I smashed with a local train.

Hot sauce is pretty good for cleaning old coins. Dip em in that chit and your dull 1 cent pieces will shine like they're brand new. Never tried it with other metals though

All the vendors seem to know each other and their history extremely well. If someone is shady or full of chit they will get outed real fast. The level of energy and historical knowledge most of the vendors I talked with exuded leads me to believe that coins are their passion and selling comes 2nd.


I bought a Marcus Aurelius (guy that Commodus murders at the beginning of Gladiator) Sestertius last week that looked similar to this one:



According to what I've read a Sestertius would buy you a loaf of bread in Roman times. Wikipedia says a record from Pompeii of a slave being sold showed it cost 6,252 sestertii.
