Impose your will, or roll with the punches?
In business lately it seems like the more chit you can put up with without it affecting you the better you will do. Basically withstanding attrition.
That said in general, is it better to:
1. Roll with the punches and never let anything bother you no matter how much chit is thrown your direction...
2. Do the traditionally "alpha" thing and lose your chit at the first sign of disrespect?
I know lots of examples of each, and each style can have success, but where is the line between respect and being walked on?

Give respect to get respect.
The person who was previously in my position would regularly lose it and over react. He was harsh and could be cruel. People hated working here. Turnover was high, productivity was poor, delivery was poor.
I take a very different approach. I treat people like human beings who make mistakes. I will typically always give a second chance for someone to rethink what was said however it is a rare circumstance when I am disrespected, because I always come from a position of power and respect. I don't HAVE to show respect, but I do anyway. From a business perspective, that has kept productivity high, delivery great, profitability high, and turnover almost zero. People like to work for me and they work hard. They also know that they can have a bad day and they won't get killed for it.
Now, if I maintained this style and nothing was going well; delivery was poor, productivity was down, profits were down etc., well then something would have to change. A big part of being successful in business is to be willing to adapt and change to meet the needs of the business at any given time.

I think it’s best to not be an austistic weirdo and communicate as situations arise (not saying you are, just in general). If you let people roll over you and then one day decide to snap you’ll come off as a weirdo nutcase, but if you’re never willing to do anything undesirable, superiors and colleagues will probably view you as a duty-shirking *******

Honestly I think it heavily depends on what kind of business you are in to determine how aggressive you move day to day. Early in my career I just naturally pushed harder than I needed to thinking that was how I was going to get ahead... and I did to a certain extent.. but being vocal , voicing my young opinions loudly got me noticed in both good and bad ways. Now , my name is known but its for the quality of my work and ability to "get it done" by any means necessary.

kissing ass does work sometimes when tryna get to the top. a lot of people get to the top not necessarily based on any specific technical skills but they know the social game, what to say and when and manipulate that to their advantage. Being sociable/likeable as an individual can take you a long way, and being positive despite all the chit being thrown at you
people that lose their chit at every single thing probably don't make it far if I'm being honest. but there's a difference between that and having people walk all over you. You can address issues/problems without being a complete dick. Being over-bearing and over-critical imo tends not to be the way in most instances. I think that just hurts morale overall. But you also don't just want to ignore things.
Acknowledge the person as a human being with their own set of circumstances and needs and they will likely come around to your way of thinking and not want to let you down. Basically make them feel important or as if they are a part of something. I think that's basically imposing your will without being so confrontational and still getting your point across. It's about how you treat/talk to people. Even if what you say is true, it's how you deliver it as well. If the person feels he is being disrespected and attacked, you probably aren't going to get your point across as effectively where as if you addressed it with more tact, they would be more receptive to what you have to say.
Perhaps frame things more as suggestions/advice and explain logically, rather than making it like a direct order as if they are drone #18292 on the assembly line. If a boss said "sales are down, work harder *******s" in some angry and menacing tone, people probably wouldn't be so inclined to do so. Nothing worse than working for somebody you phucking hate, there isn't much incentive there for anything besides the bare minimum.

Both in the sense that you shouldn't let anyone completely walk all over you, but certainly the best route is to roll with the punches. If you don't adapt, you get left behind with nothing but your ego.

In my professional life, definitely roll with the punches.... I'm a lazy bastard that only wants to do the bare minimum and collect my paycheck... Imposing my will requires too much work and I probably won't see much of a pay bump... No thank you...
Everything I post is satire.

At work? Roll with the punches 80% of the time, suggest something awesome and great and take ownership of it to drive it to fruition 20% of the time.
Thus let me live, unseen, unknown;
Thus unlamented let me die;
Steal from the world, and not a stone
Tell where I lie.

Imposing your will only works if you are clever enough to get away with it. Otherwise you will be backstabbed because people take business decisions personally.
Navigating politics and social dynamics is a game for kings and most people just cannot handle the pressure or have the ability to manipulate the strings without being burned themselves.

Since when was it ever alpha to lose your chit at the first sign of disrespect? Somebody who can't control their emotions is unpredictable, unreliable and weak.

Under most circumstances rolling with the punches IS the alpha response. When people can see you've got your shhit together and that you aren't easily rustled by their bullshhit they'll actually respect you more and ironically stop trying to get under your skin because they're finding it just ends up that THEY'RE the ones getting rustled by your stoicism.
Conversely, loosing your shhit over the smallest things makes you come off as an emotional *******. People will see it as a weakness to be exploited by pushing your buttons whenever the opportunity arises.
