I'll be in Maui for 10 days starting this friday, got my rental for 300 bucks for the whole 10 days. Got it months ago when I planned the trip. Hawaii sent back fleets of rentals during Covid, causing the issue you have today.

Idk but it drives and has 4 wheels. Got it from a local rental place rather than a big rental firm. Not too worried since most of our time wont be in the car.

I have a buddy who rents out his car to tourists for $200 a day. On top of that, he's still collecting unemployment with the extra $300 Biden bucks included per week.

I paid 45/day for a full-size car in Oahu in February. They even wanted to upgrade me to a Jeep, but I said no thanks.

Have fun though. I thought Oahu was pretty overrated by the time I left.

There's also other ways to rent cars there than through your typical rental agency.

I actually am next month.

What’s wrong with the island buses? I’ll be hoping on buses and catching Uber’s. Already mapped out bus routes and schedules back and forth. Easy and coats a few bucks. Public transport is so foreign to so many Americans lol

Oh chit the article says there's a shortage nationwide. I was going to go to Miami for a few days and I usually get a rental car to avoid putting almost 1k miles on my car. I had noticed the dates I wanted nothing was available which was unusual to begin with. Then I saw that the price of the rental was more than the hotel which was really unusual. Thanks for posting this OP because I really had no idea what was going on.

I rented from Hertz and Budget too, I think. There's quite a few agencies operating in the basement of this building. 2330 Kalakaua Ave, Honolulu, HI 96815

I just heard the food was great, didn't find anything that impressed me much other than some wings at Maui Brewing. Granted, there's probably good places to eat, just didn't happen to find one I loved. And a lot of restaurants were closed at the time.

I'm not a huge beach person compared to my partner, but we did find some decent beaches. I'd spend more time away from Waikiki, but couldn't convince my partner to move hotels to other areas on the island. I thought the hiking was pretty underwhelming. There was only one hike I really enjoyed.

Honestly, the island life just isn't for me. I went to Moab in October, and there's just so much more to explore/see/drive to. Don't get me wrong, there's plenty to see in Oahu, but out of all the places I've been it's probably one I would never return to.

There were also a lot of covid restrictions when I went, which kind of brought down the vibe, honestly. Good luck finding a public restroom.

Some of the pros were no bugs and the weather was pretty good considering we went in the rainy season. Only saw one good sunset though.

Either way, I hope you enjoy it.

Don't be surprisedifthey cancel your reservation and only have higher-priced options. Seems to be a crapshoot, even w/the local rental companies. That's been happening non-stop for about a month. I had a June trip planned but canceled it because I refuse to put up with this bull**** on top of the numerous COVID tests just to get there. Best of luck to you though, I'm not up for the risk of turning a vacation into stress.

Hawaii in general is overrated. The only Island (for me personally) that lived up to the hype was Kauai....and it is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. Its as close are you are going to get to heaven on earth.

Would do Kauai again in a heartbeat, the rest of the islands not so much.

Turo still has reasonable prices for cars.

EDIT Nevermind, just Honolulu. Maui and Kauai are FUKT. Great if you're already on Turo though.

Thanks, on spread.

Food options seem limited, you’re right. “Hawaiian” food seems bland, but I expect some great Japanese food. I bet Waikiki places are mostly a tourist trap, hope not though.

I’m just planning on catching the early buses to hit the beaches, and ubering on the way back.

Yes, wanted to go to Kauai, but it required another covid test and some other restrictions. Partner wasn't willing to do that. Still hope to go there someday to compare it to Glacier NP. From an awe standpoint.

Waikiki is pretty dang touristy. I wouldn't say a trap, but there are several blocks near the beach that is nothing but luxury hotels and designer brands with homeless mixed in. That's another aspect that left me sad and a little confused. It's worth a walk through it at night for some drinks and maybe some food with nice atmosphere and move on to the other areas.

There's also plenty of bikes to rent. If it were just me, I would choose this route. It's biking friendly and a great way to see any city that accommodates biking, imo, but do you.

hawaii is overpriced af in general... could go to places just as nice beaches/weather, better food/drinks, and much friendlier locals for a fraction of the cost.

I thought this was sort of weird as well. My cousin is more well-traveled than I am in 3rd world countries anyways. It's supposedly pretty affordable depending on location. It's more common than I thought. I was able to use one for an airport lift in Budapest anyway and it was convenient and just like an Uber. I just don't really like the idea of one person waiting around for me all day, but I guess it's a job.

I am 4 days out from my trip and they haven't canceled yet, I called them up and followed up with an email confirming that the reservation is set. Ive heard stories about people getting shafted, keeping my fingers crossed.
