If you could go back and do things over again, what do?

Ragrets thrad.

If you could go back and give youth another try, what would you do differently? For me I would have maybe gone to film school, learned how to make movies and all that. For some reason I didn't really get into movies until a couple years ago, now I'm always interested in films that have some interesting point to make about humanity and society, a cool story to tell, etc. I spend a lot of time doing film analysis out of personal interest.

this question isn't really much geared towards "If you knew then what you know now...", but just in general missing the ship that sailed kinds of matters.

For me I would have maybe gone to cooking school, learned how to make food and all that. For some reason I didn't really get into food until a couple years ago, now I'm always interested in food that have some interesting point to make about humanity and society, a cool story to tell, etc. I spend a lot of time doing cooking analysis out of personal interest.

Stayed home with my parents for a year longer. Not wasted a couple of years with my college crush. Having started my job right as the economy crashed in 08, I was primed to make a killing had I invested more. Would probably be close to a millionaire had I just thrown money in and forgotten about it.

Edit- actually I would be. Goddammit...

I broke an antique store window when I was 19 because my mother beat me up. If I could go back to a couple of months before that happened with the knowledge I have today, I would avoid going to jail and getting on probation.

Breaking that window caused me to owe $2,100 restitution and my probation officer made it a condition of my probation that I couldn’t be a bodybuilder. They were concerned that I would get too big and strong to control.

If I could go back and change it, I would collect recyclables and buy dumbbells in pairs from 15 pounds up to 50 pounds in five pound increments. I’d also get a bench.

I would get a copy of my birth certificate from Sacramento (originally a big hassle, because I was on probation in San Luis Obispo county and couldn’t leave the county.)

I’d get my GED that same year, too. And a California ID. Things like that would’ve made my life a lot easier. I’d also get a bank account.

Not waste all the money on protein powder.

But honestly, I think there is nothing to feel regretful for. I do think that things happen for a reason. I think we all learn or should be able to learn from past mistakes. Any tough situations that everyone has been through made a stronger you. Only thing I regret is not playing football in high school.

Leave the JW religion earlier. Dead fukn serious.

It was technically out of my control for most of my childhood/teen years, but I didn't plan for my future because I genuinely believed the world didn't have one. For a while I was socially stunted, and I still have a lot of repressed anger from my experiences from the inside. At the same time, I think I'm better for it. I'm a much more open minded person, and a lot of my character building came from how I was raised.

Some good, some bad, and some regret.

oh yeah that's a big one for me. When I started working I was dumping all my leftover money into a savings account. My parents had me convinced the stock market was so volatile and shady that I would certainly lose every single dollar I had. So for several years I kept stocking up cash, collecting a nice 0.04% interest which of course I always was taxed on. Nice.

One day my grandma calls me up and bluntly asks me "why don't you invest your money like a normal person?" I could have maybe 2x as much net worth as I do now had I invested sooner, maybe around 2009 or 2010

bro-tip to young miscers: Invest early. don't be nervous bros.

-Hit on every girl in sight in undergrad. As a tech brah, you will go weeks without even seeing a cute 19yo girl who doesn't have a boyfriend. In college, you have access to them every day. Fuk studying, take an F and turn in that homework late, and go meet some girls.

-Leave after your bachelors. Circuit design grad school is super not worth it. You won't even end up working in circuit design.

-Stay in Texas after undergrad. You have a nucleus of a social circle there that will get you out of FA and you're just going to blow it up by leaving. Ofc you only left Texas because there was no one hiring there in a pandemic, but you wouldn't be graduating into a pandemic economy in 2018 now would you.

Would have gotten my degree starting at 19. I went ANG so I could have gotten it for free, but then I started working and dropped out. I have a successful career now, but something in the back of my head.

Well I also remember taking a personal finance class and they sort of did the same thing my parents did. They told us that there were these mystery savings accounts out there that paid like 4% interest, and here's how you compound your investment, how much money you will have in a few short years. No mention of investing in mutual funds. Again, it was a personal finance class, and they didn't teach us about investing properly.

I always assumed it was some convoluted thing you had to study up on to figure out. Turns out you open a fcking account and pick an option and call it a day.

- Started learning certain skills in my early 20s to set myself up for later.

- Started saving money and working on my credit earlier.

- Started bulking and lifting seriously in my early 20s.

- Been less of an autist and take advantage of a few of the opportunities I had with some girls.

I think military should be pushed more on kids like me right after High School because college isn't for everyone. In the military you'll come out more disciplined, motivated, and with more life experience than most others

- went out for my uni's D1 team a year earlier than when i tried out, woulda made it srs (didnt make it the only time i tried in 2009)
- enlisted in a afsc that required a ts/sci (chose kc-135 fuels mx instead)
- get in on network security around 2004ish before when it first got big
- brb be making at least 200k by now
- worked like normal, invested, bought a house back then
- had life on easy mode

probably lots more
