Something is going on with the chickens(srs)

I’ve eaten thousands of eggs in the past 10 years and in the first 9 of those I came across two of the coveted double yolk eggs. However, just in the first few months of 2021 I’ve already seen three. Anyone else out there who can confirm the increase in double yolks?

Coincidence, hormones, you buying cheap eggs.

Some combination there, I'm sure. You might not be able to affect the coincidence or hormones they pump into most chickens, but you can start buying local eggs or at the least the supposedly free range ones at most Krogers or Tom Thumbs.

I always buy “free range” chicken eggs - usually the Simple Truth organic brand from Kroger. But if it’s from a different store I still go with the free range organic options. I also eat eggs from a local farm. Never seen a double yolk from those, but that’s a very small percentage of the eggs I eat.

Dunno bro. Double yolk eggs disgust me for some reason, I've only seen one anytime recently and I go through probably 3 dozen eggs/week (me and family).

Have you begun buying larger eggs? You have a better chance of getting double yolks with 'jumbo' eggs.

I haven’t. I cook a lot of eggs for me and the family so almost daily. Cant confirm double yolks being more common though.

About 6 months ago we bought one container of a dozen jumbo eggs. 9 of the 12 had double yolks. It wasn’t our usual brand of eggs and it was very strange indeed.

Skip the free range if they are marked that the chickens get a vegetarian diet. I buy straight from the farm - the yolk is a vibrant orange rather than that dull yellow and they taste soooo much better. Just expensive around $5/dz here but I am supporting a local farmer directly.

Can confirm brah. Had 2 double yolks in the same dozen organic eggs. Another one in the same batch was “scrambled” inside but the egg itself was fully intact.

I actually remember seeing the odd one as a kid but can't really recall seeing one since. I've actually seen cartons of them at the store occasionally so they must have some way to either produce them on purpose or separate them out during sorting.

Younger chickens lay more double yolk eggs, farm probably got more new chickens recently.

If that’s true then maybe the supply chain disruptions last year resulted in older chickens getting killed and/or prevented many batches of younger chicks from being born. If that happened and then they tried to catch up then it could mean a much larger percentage of the layers are younger.


Just a complete guess on my part as I have no idea if any of that happened.
