Have you heard of the concept of "White Fragility?"

I recently read a book called'White Fragility: Why It's So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism.'It was written by Robin Diangelo — a sociologist who received her PhD in Multicultural Education from the University of Washington. She earned tenure at Westfield State University, and is currently an Affiliate Associate Professor of Education at the University of Washington, in Seattle.



In the book, she argues that white people in America are fragile when it comes to issues of race, due to a culturally sheltered experience of life. She dubbed this phenomenon "white fragility."

My question to you is, do you think she's right? I think she's onto something here.

Here's some extra information to get you to understand the concept.
DiAngelo describes white fragility to be a defensive response by a white person when their whiteness is highlighted or mentioned, or their racial worldview is challenged, whether this response is conscious or otherwise. She gives examples including a white man accusing someone of "playing the race card" or a white woman crying to avoid conflict.DiAngelo proposes that white people are used to viewing themselves as "raceless" or the "default" race, and as such are insulated from feelings of racial discomfort.She describes racism as systematic rather than overt and conscious, arguing that racial segregation has shaped the United States. She points to research that has shown that children as young as four years old show a strong and consistent pro-white bias and an especially strong prejudice against black males.
It's a great book — a New York Times Best Seller — I highly recommend that you read it.

I mean, it's certainly a valid concept, right?

It's analogous towards growing up wealthy, as opposed to poor. The... ignorance, so to speak. Like a mommy's boy living by themselves for the first time, not knowing how to cook, or to clean. It's a shock to the system, because they're simply not acclimatized to such stressors. Like not being inoculated towards a deadly pathogen. Vulnerable, like opening your eyes to the bright lights in the morning.

No I don't agree with her, she has no way of proving her hypothesis. In biology we run tests to prove a hypothesis with H0 and H1, her "conclusion" is a poor interpretation of results, that doesn't take into the complexity of other factors. You can't just sum up something as multi-variant as life with an over-arching theme of racism. She's working from the paradigm that racism is the cause of disparity between both whites and blacks, and her conclusion relies on the history of the USA - so it doesn't apply to the any other western country since they don't share the same history. Secondly her "theory" is just an opinion, it's not based on objective fact.

I'd also like to point out that whites like her won't talk about the modern day exploitation others face, they love to tell others how if they are white they benefit from colonisation, so they're guilty of some sort of original sin. Well okay fine, say this is the truth. The same original sin can be applied to every American, both black, white, trans and whatever, big American companies often use sweatshop labour for cheap products, which thus benefits the American consumer. The modern day colonial is the american, not the white man, not the black man, but the American.

But ofc Robin DiAngelo won't discuss this in her book, because then it would mean her sacred group (the blacks) are assigned any sort of blame.

Bro it's a retarded concept. If white people are fragile around race, then what do you say for other races who get triggered the second you say the wrong word? Racial fragility is not tied down to any particular race but is simply a pattern of behaviour that is exhibited by individuals who derive a large portion of their individual identity from their group identity.

Secondly, it's true that not having experienced a particular form of injustice makes you largely blind to it. But there are many ways you can be unjustly treated, and they all hurt in their own way. A white kid may not experience the particular set of injustices that a black kid does, but it doesn't mean his life isn't rife with its own particular set of injustices and challenges which will affect him in various ways. People from all walks of life commit suicide regularly. The suffering that life brings is by no means something exclusive to any one race.

The only reason why it's hard for white people to talk about racism is because they're not allowed to so lol

I actually love talking about racism that way I can point out the blatant hypocrisy and statistical data to prove that black people are their own worst enemies. I also make sure to tell the person that diversity is highly overrated and BLM is a terrorist organization.
