Become stranded on a desert island: Stay or attempt to leave?

A simple and random hypothetical:

You crash land on a desert island ala Castaway. You don't know how long rescue will be, if its coming at all.


Do you stay on the island and attempt to survive, or do you leave on a makeshift raft?

I'd wait. People will be looking for you. The aircraft has an ELT which sends out radio signals making it easy for them to find you. If you crashed in shallow water or on land they will have no trouble receiving those signals and finding you.
