I’m in the midst of reading the Patrick O’Brian novel series upon which the 2003 film Master and Commander was based. What great reads.

- Captain “Lucky Jack” Aubrey and Doctor Stephen Maturin are great characters. They are reasonable, mature, responsible yet flawed men who speak and behave as men of their time and place would’ve.

- The stories are well-written. They tend to be a little episodic but in general there are some great twists and turns as the two main characters progress through their careers in the British Royal Navy during the early 1800s.

- One cannot imagine today’s average weak, effeminate millennials surviving long under the harsh discipline and unforgiving conditions that the naval officers and crewmen face in the books.

- The language and attention to detail are intense. The references to maritime culture and technology of the time, and the descriptions of the time and place, go over my head a lot. After a while I’ve gotten used to it. The English language was once more beautiful and enjoyable than it is now (no one was saying crap like JK LULZ).

- I am on book 7 of 21. Long way to go.

I only watched the movie.

The series has been in my must-read list for years but I've never started it.

I am currently listening audiobooks, a military science fiction series, "Honor Harrington series" by David Weber.

It's about Space Navy not actual Navy but it reminded me of "Master and Commander" on several occasions while I was reading....listening it.
