External GPS vs Smartphone?

Okay so today i bought an external GPS, a garmin drivesmart 65. Overall i love it so far. No complaints. The big screen is amazing(biggest selling point for me), doesn't get hot like my iPhone X and lag, gets me from point A to point B like needed.

But are external GPS's outdated and i dun goofed? Keep or return? What do misc?

For safety reasons, nothing beats a stand alone gps. It doesn't need an internet connection to generate a map. Your phone does.

I was driving LA to Detroit 5 years ago and legit almost ran out of gas in the middle of the country bc I couldn't map a gas station without cell service.

Definitely not.

Got a Drivesmart 50 or 55 a couple years ago. Nothing beats a dedicated GPS. Best thing about it is you can put in hotspots/waypoints/whatever in degrees minutes seconds or in decimal

So i go on Alltrails, find the hikes and because they give it to you in decimal, just go on the drivesmart and put it right in. Now you can get to your campground / trail / wherever with no signal

You sure the phone doesn't have a GPS receiver? Pretty sure they do...
