Home decorators how do you know what furniture to get and how to space it?

I need to start shopping for furniture I have a pretty good idea of waht furniture I want to get.....lots of leather items with some cement end tables.

My living room is 14x15...kinda small. Its open to the kitchen/front of the house on one side and the other side is closed off and has access to the stairs.

One of my main issues is, where do I position my couch...do i set it against the back wall, which gives more room but anyone going up/down stairs would have to cross the entire living room.

Or do I put the couch closer to the front of the room/tv and allow a walkway behind? THis will amke the room smaller and I wont be able to fit as many seats as I would like but anyone going up/down the stairs would be able to go around the seated people.

Choose where you want the TV and go from there.

Stay away from cheap furniture. Bonded leather, particle board, etc.
