If misc. goes down can we buy the data ?

Like basically upload the entire forum onto another site but with same data and everything ?

Like when they port PC games to console?

Good question. Also rip in pieces to anyone who did.

I wouldn't be surprised if the forum is built on open source forum code or at least very inexpensive or old forum code. There are probably newer formats that could be simplified to match the current one. Here is an example.

Launching a forum is dead simple, all the code has been written and you can just load up a template. The hard part is getting users, handling large amounts of traffic, and moderation. The first problem is already solved, but the second two are not.

This is all it would take if the misc was shut down, it could even retain the same name as I don't think it's copyrighted. Of course it would be something else entirely, but it could retain the same users and spirit. It is also possible to use a more retro template for consistency.

Since this forum operates in the EU can’t we request all our data through GDPR or some chit?

I know if you contact the big social media companies they’ll send you a file with all the info they’ve got on you or something like that.

It could technically be done with a web crawler or similar tool. Would not be a simple task though. Pulling the data and re-uploading it to a new format, hosting a new site, handling traffic, and moderating it requires the effort of professionals. The misc needs capital to function from bb.com revenue.

We can discuss a backup plan for the misc, but actually executing it would be difficult to do pro-bono. My annual hosting plan just expired, and I don't have a good domain or a hosting deal that can handle high traffic. I think moderation would be critical. Here are some domains that are available.

themisc dot com (censored for some reason) - $875k
themisc.org - $9.99
misc.com - $2k
