Does anyone else miss the days when fitness/lifting was an underground subculture?

YouTube and social media has made everyone "in the know" now. Everyone and their grandmothers now be talking about their lifting routine, diet, and supplementation.

I miss the days where everyone was dumb and ignorant regarding health and fitness. When people thought squatting below parallel was bad, for example. Pre 2010's. Now everyone knows everything.

I miss the golden era - when guys used to curl in the squat rack. Now everyone is a gay ass powerlifter wearing knee sleeves, oly shoes, and an inzer belt, gaying up the joint with their chalk. Taking 2 hours to finish with the rack.

Goddamn!

I came in around 2014-2015 but it’s completely dif today

Today everyone and every new influencer is a literal copy/clone of each other it’s not even funny

They all do the same chit, say the same ****, wear the same chit, use the same buzzwords, and try to sell the same program lmao.

There’s literally 0 originality anymore. Jonskywalker, zyzz and even Jeff seid had some originality. Even tho Jeff copied zyzz he still had his own personality

Jonskywalker is the true goat

Now dudes like that isiahmiranda ******* are here

i got big into fitness and health at 13 and a half. . mostly cause my home broke up and was some where new and had to focus my energies. adhd and other **** didnt help but on the real was doing 300 sit ups before i was 14. not every night mind you. just was the number i maxed out at one night. started going. also did at least 50. wanted to see how far i could go. made it to 300 and then was telling my self got to quit sometime and by that time in was doing that akward back and fourth/side to side motion just to get make it.

i never viewed it as a sub culture. my dad bought us a weight bench and some dumb bells. had in the attic.. bought arnolds encyclopedia of modern body building and bought muscle and fitness and flex every month. pretty sure my grandparents and mom thoiught i was just wanting to check out the hot chics in bikinis back then. which did add to the appeal. most those mags were field with adds anyways. and all joe weider supplements were crap

It was never really underground. Bodybuilding and going all into the competition world has been and still is a subculture.

Lifting itself has been popular for decades. Even old boomers have an old bench and some standard weights laying around in their attic.

Lifting was hot in the 80's, but cooled off in the 90's. 2000's it started to pickup late 2000's thanks to internet forums IMO. 2010's it exploded thanks to YouTube and social media.

it’s cause the roid physique is what people think 6 months in the gym looks like. ex. Jeff seid/ connor Murphy David laid is what women expect

I never tell women I lift for this reason

Being fit has become a status symbol. Go to any A tier city and almost everyone young who is also a professional will be pretty fit , more so if they came from a top school

the problem is when you say bodybuilding everyone thinks you are trying to say you are like anrold or lee haney or coleman. not everybody lifts for mass or competition. some just want strength not that lifting alone gives you strength where it matters..but many just want to have a good shape and some muscle tone.

you tell people you belong to a site called bodybuilding.com and they think wtf you dont lift or look like arnold or haney? many of us here have been here for years. ive been here since 2006. many of us were always just into health and fitness and toning.. again peoples thoughts and opinions sometimes come from ignorance cause they ASSSUME and dont take the time to actually find out the facts

Yeah, I’ve been here forever and while I like looking good from lifting, I don’t consider myself a bodybuilder in the traditional respect - looking like Ronnie/Jay, and competing. I consider myself a lifter. I like to lift to get stronger, and knowing that I can handle whatever physical activity comes my way, and I also like to look good while doing it.

I think CrossFit has done a lot of good for the lifting community, although I don’t do CrossFit, I at least respect a lot of what they do. I think that’s when lifting started to get a lot more popular - right when lifting started taking off, like 2009.

agreed.

only on the misc will you consistently find a warped sense of literally everything and anything imaginable and a lot of male miscers are unknowingly boxer dropping instead of panty dropping.
