Should I become a police officer?

I got accepted to the academy but I'm conflicted.

I'm not sure I agree with arresting people for drug use and making their already hard lives even harder with a prison term and felony record.

That's about 60 percent of what cops do. The other 40 is 30 percent revenue collection in the form of tickets and impounds and 10 percent being excessively aggressive to people for hurting their ego.

So no, not for you

That’s why we use discretion when making arrests. I’ve been a cop for 13 years. Made hardly any drug arrests. Usually if I find just a small amount, I’ll just destroy it. If they were found using it in their car in the parking lot of a business, which is very common where I work, they are trespassed from that business. I don’t write very many traffic tickets either, only when they’re doing something extreme or pretty dangerous

nice
when I did the background interview the investigator said I would have to enforce all laws even if I didn't agree with them, otherwise I would get into legal trouble. I don't think I would risk it personally. Maybe Washington is more lenient with drug enforcement laws.

Probably depends a lot on location. Chicago or NYPD would be a lot different than other areas.

Lol, we don’t even really have drug enforcement laws anymore. Recently signed bill says we basically just have to refer them to treatment. But my statement about rarely making drug arrests is from all the time before that bill was signed

medium city, has its share of murders, drugs, and prostitution, not progressive like Cali or NW but not too conservative either

yeah heard the NW was progressive in that regard
you were never worried about getting caught destroying drugs before? do you not have quotas for writing tickets?

Not worried about “getting caught” destroying drugs, because we are allowed to that. Our bosses, even the prosecutor, tell us to use discretion and only charge somebody if we really think it’s worth it. So my choices are either destroy the drugs we found, or give them back to the person.

No ticket quotas. I don’t know of any other agencies in my area that have ticket quotas either

I was very close to joining the police but didn’t.
I had opportunities within a couple different agencies.

Ultimately, not sure that lifestyle is for me. It had its pros and cons.

Pros:
- Variety to your workday
- maybe some exciting tasks
- meaningful work

Cons
- political bullchit
- danger
- desire for more $ than that career easily offers

He means legally destroying them. That's what we do at my department too. Book them into the evidence room and if there aren't charges attached, they get destroyed. Not talking dog the bounty hunter stomping on a bag of meth in the street.

As for ruining people's lives for drugs, states have become so lax on drug laws. I haven't made one drug arrest so far this year for the sole purpose of drug possession. Every single one I contacted on a call because someone called us due to another crime they were committing, came across them sitting in a car with a bunch of stolen stuff, or sitting in a stolen car full of stolen stuff.

Do what, arrest people for possessing drugs for personal use?

Drugs are basically zero tolerance in my state, so I'm assuming I would have to. I was looking at crime rates in my city cause I was looking for a house and I saw arrests for possession of drugs with no other accompanying charges as well.
Also, my background investigator asked me about marijuana use and drug use in general. I told her that drug use can fuel other crimes like burglary and can negatively affect communities but if I had to vote for decriminalizing drugs I probably would. She said I would have to enforce drug laws as a police officer and I said I would otherwise I would not take the job.

if you have a badge. you are given something by god. cause you can make or break a persons destiny. yes in the end we all lay in the bed we make

but as a law man. i never got to be one mind you. but what you ask. i use to ask my self. and this is what i always came up with.

if you pull over a kid. not really a kid but just got into adult hood. and you find some pot on him. you run his background. all comes back good. never been in trouble. in my mind i always seen my self putting the cuffs on tight. and putting him in the back of my squad car. giving him a speech how he has ****ked his life up and he has a felony. and no good jobs can ever be had. and i would walk off and act like i was doing something. give this person a good 20 mins or so to think. scare him some. let those feels hit home. you just ruined your life. and for what?

then id come back and uncuff him. talk to him. some times a scare is good enough and it will put a good kid on the right path. jail will just mix his mind up, get hom talking to the wrong kind of people.

then id cut him loose. if i oulled someone over 19 or 20 and they already have a rap sheet as long as my arm. then no. chances can and should be given but not always.. at that point. the system and their own desires/destiny will take over, id lock them up.

being a law man/woman is a special thing. its not like JOBS. cause to be a real law man or woman you must see it as a calling.

there is a time to bend and break the rules. there is a time to break policy. so long as its in the NAME OF GOOD.

if you know. not think. not guess but KNOW this person is a serial killer and he or she is just a bit too slick for their own good and they keep getting away doing it. but you KNOW it is them. again its not 98% not 99% YOU KNOW 100% its that person.

do you go home at the end of the night and say "ill let him kill some more and MAYBE he will mess up" or do you bend and break the rules and plant evidence.

id bend and break the rules every time. and plant evidence, SO LONG AS I KNEW 100% IT WAS THAT PERSON.

now compare that to a uniformed man who finds out a guy is sleeping with his wife. do you plant evidence then? do you break and bend the rules then? for your own selfish needs and wants. NO YOU DO NOT.

a true law man/woman always sees the sheds of grey cause they serve the law. who makes the law? politicans? so if a criminally corrupt politician and his buddies get a law passed so they can get rich but you KNOW its not right. what do you do? if you support said laws or do the politicians bidding then you are doing nothing but helping and serving the very type of people you swore to lock away in the first place.

not all criminals carry guns . some wear suits. and when they get in the system and they manipulate to serve them. you are faced with a choice... serve the criminal in a suit. or fall back on the morals and decency that maybe your dad or grandfather or grandmother or mom taught you.

you have to know when to bend..

you have to know when to stand strong and firm and know the little places in the middle.

there is a spot in heaven for every real REAL badge holder. cause it is gods work. you are protecting good people from evil people. that is the main directive.

every good law man and woman knows KNOWS the pain and heatbreak of evil and they KNOW the good feelings that come with either protecting the good or making the evil stand under color of LAW.

if you see it as a JOB and just a JOB. then you need to just find something else to do.

in the words of stan lee NUFF SAID!
"it takes a wise man to know when he is in error and a noble man to admit to it"
