Maybe if lower paying jobs weren't also typically more difficult.

minimum wage jobs are more difficult than high-paying office jobs. where you could go without showing up for weeks and no one would notice

IDK.

I do wonder why someone doesn't make an app where you can input your location, general employment information, family makeup, etc. to see which income levels are "sweet spots" when you calculate how much money you actually get to keep/spend after accounting for government benefits and taxes. I'm fairly certain that there are points along the income ladder where earning a few dollars more actually makes you worse off.

Depends on the job. Some low wage jobs are mindless/very easy. Some are fairly taxing. Childcare and eldercare/home health generally have low pay. EMTs often make around $15 an hour.

Studies show a persons happiness does not really increase after making 60k (assuming they are single). If you aren't passionate about your work- then I would say there is nothing inherently wrong with it, it may be worth finding something career wise that your passionate about and not worry so much about the salary- double win.

how old are you that you haven't figured out how income tax levels work yet?

It isn't quite that simple though. The federal taxes are one part of the math, but there can also be state and local taxes. Then there are federal, state, and sometimes even local benefits.

Benefits are trickier than taxes as there is usually a hard cut off, or a benefits cliff. Some like the Earned Income Credit phase out, but other just go straight to zero if you go $1 over.

ETA:An example from social security=
Once you reach FRA, there is no cap on how much you can earn and still receive your full Social Security benefit. The earnings limits are adjusted annually for national wage trends. In 2021, you lose $1 in benefits for every $2 earned over $18,960.Dec 23, 2020
Seems easy enough; for every $2 you earn your SS goes down by $1 so you are still ahead by $1. Maybe. Because when it comes to taxes your higher taxable income could mean you don't even get to keep the extra $1 or you lose out because it affects another program, like maybe income based housing for seniors. Could be that your rent would go up.

It is always best to make as much money as possible as early as possible then invest it for passive returns.

once you go up in a tax bracket, only the amount above that line is taxed at that rate and so on.

IE: I make $80k/yr, the first $10k taxed at 10%, $30k taxed at 12% then the last $40K is taxed at 22%
