Anyone sold their car to Carvana or Carmax?

Got offered quite a bit over what we owe on my wife's van. We setup everything up and have a pickup coming next week. Seems way too easy. I'm naturally skeptical, so I am assuming they are going to get here and try to offer me like 3K less than the quote. The quote was done off the VIN#, so they know what we have. Van is a 2018 and has only been driven weekends for the last two years due to my wife having a work car.

Interested in other miscers experiences. Reps til I'm out.

I would make sure you check out other car buying sites as well: Algo, Vroom, Givemethevin, also check Kelley blue book and cars.com, a local dealer will make you an offer.

I just sold my Jeep to Givemethevin for $3,500 more than Carvana offered. They are legit. Sent them everything, dropped the car off at Manheim (pick up not available in my area) and the check was sent and deposited. Easy.

Get MULTIPLE quotes, I couldn't believe the difference in offers I was getting, I'm talking about thousands of dollars difference.

Thanks brah, I did that and Carvana was the highest, followed by Carmax. The rest were well under.

I sold to carvana and it went smooth. I did take pictures of all the imperfections...just a few slight scratches. When they got here they just done a quick walk around and test drive and that was it. No negotiating - check was already written.

I think they would only try to negotiate if you left out something that would cost like $500+ to fix.

Did you get a carmax quote online? Last time I tried it tried to have me make an appointment for it.

I did do Carmax online... no appt, they sent an offer but it was $1500 less than Carvana.

I'm having the van professionally detailed on Monday to buff out any minor imperfections. I don't want to give them any reason to hassle me.

Definitely do check out the competitors. I think Vroom offered me another $600, but I ended up stalling and missed the offer, at which point they lowered it when I pulled a new estimate.

It's legit, though. I leased a sensible car because I'm super low-mileage planning to either sell it back to the dealer above the buyout or buy it out and sell it myself. Ended up getting considerably more cash out from Carvana without the hassle and they did all the paperwork to close out the lease.
Nah, fukk that. I’m not doing that.

I think a lot of is dependent on the vehicle as well, but Stealerships are horrible places to ask for quotes usually.

Out of reps, but thank you. Mind blow it's this easy. I did shop around, so I feel very pleased with Carvana's offer. It was 1-2K more than everyone else.

Our last 4 or even 5 cars have ALL been carmax. So easy, no bullchit, fair pricing, unless you need a specific dealer I can't think of a reason to shop anywhere else. Although, would definitely get an offer from Carvana at least since they're trying aggressively to steal market share.

The last vehicle I bought was in 2020 and bc of Covid Carmax just took a few pictures of ext/int/pop the hood and some remote person told them what to offer me. It was A LOT higher than I wanted or KBB told me to expect... their loss of efficiency bc of Covid I suppose.

I wouldn't bother with the professional detail.

I sold my car to Carvana a month ago and they barely looked at the car. Just showed up with the check and handed it to me. Didn't even drive it. I just washed it and cleaned out the interior so it looked nice and even that was probably unnecessary.

Coworker got a quote from carvana to use as leverage to get more for a trade in. He said it worked.

Look up the cost to replace the vehicle with a similar one. Maybe they're still gonna profit and it's only more than you owe because the price was so much lower when you got the loan.

I sold mine through Carvana since the gave me like $1,800 more than the dealer would have for a trade.

Possibly the most painless car experience of my life.

I thought the same thing you did - they'd show up and offer less. I even put 'excellent' condition when it really wasn't. Basically the truck showed up, he gave it a once over, didn't even drive it - just turned it on to make sure no check engine lights were on.

Handed me the check and that was it. I'd recommend them without hesitation based on my experience.

I honestly don't know how they are making money - My guess is they are burning through that sweet venture capital ATM and hemorrhaging money to build the brand, but IDK.

I only used KBB and when the dealers got the "quote," they wanted to offer me 3k less than what KBB said it was worth. Said no thx Jeff. It's my SS and I don't have to sell it. I consider it a commodity at this point, especially when compared against the inflated dollars they were offering. Now, if they ponied over the other 3k, I'd sell it.

6 weeks ago considered trading in my '15 GMC (bought '21 high country). Dealership offered me $24k. KBB suggested 26-28k was the trade value so I passed on trading and just bought the truck.

Came home and did the KBB.com "instant cash offer" and it suggested $28k. Got a call from 2 dealerships in about 10 minutes. Took it to one and they asked me what price wold make me sell it to them right then, and I threw out $29k. They took it. So, got $5k more than original dealer offered.

I've tried Carmax on 2 previous occasions and they were never the most competitive which is why I didn't even give them a shot this time.

Said this same thing to my wife. I'm assuming they are paying high to get inventory. More inventory = more options for customers = more money in the long term.

I'm interested to see how this goes Tuesday.

Whats there to see m8? Its all standard...they get inspected..if anything the issues would be minor rips or markings, being a sued car.

But used cars are at a premium...so they may be giving you more than you thought, it will still be in line with waht its worth and waht they can resale it for.

I used carmax. Such a smooth process. Didn't have to deal with payment issues or anything. I owed pretty much what I sold it to them for, they contacted bank for me, paid it off, took care of title, all within an hour and a half. Was a great process.

Part of the way stealerships make money is ripping you off on trade in value.

Always get a quote from a reputable place like carmax or other 3rd party before trading a car in.

LOL, yeah - they are not making money.

But why? I don’t get it at all.

I can get a brand new 4Runner with a warranty for $500 more than a used one. Wtf would I buy a used one, especially when the differential in finance rates ALONE makes the used car payment MORE?

It's all part of the plandemic. You can't even buy new right now because of parts shortages.

I tired one time and that's exactly what they did. Low balled in person after I drove an hour. Don't know about today though with the strong care sales market.

I don't think they could pull that off right now with the demand for used cars right now. Lots of competition, plus if they did it enough you'd think their reputation would take a hit.

I will say, I had some windshield damage. One reason I wanted to dodge the lease return was because I knew they'd screw me on that. A windshield wiper had somehow gotten out-of-track and rubbed the metal clip on it that first winter for a while before I noticed (I think it was probably like that when it was delivered in November), and gouged off the coating in a thin strip from one side to the other , which, because of Toyota $afety $en$e, is apparently a costly repair.

The questions did not encompass anything like that at Carvana, the driver who came to take it away didn't note it, and they cut me the full check after inspecting it.

They're going to do their own detailing, for sure. Do your thing, but I wouldn't spend any money prepping it beyond running it through the car wash and a good vacuuming.
Nah, fukk that. I’m not doing that.

I honestly don't know how they are making money - My guess is they are burning through that sweet venture capital ATM and hemorrhaging money to build the brand, but IDK.
This is correct - the strategy for all these startups is to gain MARKET SHARE, which is way more valuable than the VC money they've raised. For exactly the reason this thread is showing, they aren't screwing people over both ways like Stealerships by offering $3-4k less than the value of the car, and then screwing them on the price / financing / residual of the new car / lease...they make multiple thousands on each side.

I can't speak the the selling side - but I purchased my current car through CarMax, I'm a higher net-worth individual, and admittedly a bit of a snob, so the thought of even entertaining a vehicle from CarMax made me feel dirty....but honestly, the entire experience was incredibly simple and painless. I used their app to search for the EXACT vehicle & configuration I knew I wanted, I waited for a few months for a really nice one to pop up with low mileage (18k miles, 2 years old, still in warranty) decently below market value...the only worry was it was in Seattle and I'm in SF....so I had to pay a non-refundable shipping fee of $750, this was my biggest ass-clenching moment. Car arrived EXACTLY as described, with the 1 little scratch they identified prior to shipping.

It was easy, I got a good deal, customer service was pretty solid - I hope the dealerships die a slow painful death, can't think of a group of people who deserve it more, besides Real Estate agents.
