Question for gun guys

I know that one guy used to post “so you want to buy an AR _______ edition” and those were pretty good, but I’m kinda out of the loop on fire arms.

I would like to get something but I’m in no rush. I’m also in California, and supposedly they are repealing a ban on ARs too, so maybe I should wait?

I like to buy things that hold their value and are reliable.

Should I wait until this AR ban possibly clears up?

Or what’s a good standard piece that holds its value and what is the right price to buy it at?

I know that’s really vague, but I guess I’m looking for the “Rolex Submariner” of guns, something they holds it value

It's better to have one and not need it than need one and not have it. If you think otherwise, you probably should take a greater interest in history.

Bro an AR is not a machine gun- it is a semi-auto just like a pistol.

OP if you want an AR style rifle I would look at M&P/Colt/Armalite- all good guns. Generally a gun is not going to depreciate in value much. Maybe you should go to a range and try out a few different guns to get a feel. As far as pistols- cannot beat something like an M&P Shield.

no, i cant disagree with that. the pros out weigh the cons. just depends on the individual. some people just do not have the mentality to carry any firearm.

any gun in the hand of an untrained/disturbed mind is like putting someone in a ferrari getting them up to 200 miles an hr and then blind folding them..

100% pro guns in the hands of the right people

Good news. In California, buying a gun is like buying real estate. In the big picture, the price always goes up. Not true anywhere else, but true in our retarded state.

Truth is, the assault weapons ban isn't a big deal in terms of acquisition. AR's are totally modular. And the compliance "mag lock" and "fin grip" solution lots of manufacturers offered for CA is reversible in five minutes if you buy something now and the ban is lifted.

My advice is still to start with a handgun. A CZ SP-01 is a fantastic firearm and not overly expensive. An HK USP 9mm or Sig P226 9mm are also great choices.

If you can find an LWRC AR15 that's CA compliant now, you can remove the mag lock easily if/when the ban is officially listed. They make great guns.

They didn't repeal the ban on AR's, the law is in effect until July 4th in the best case. I'm no legal expert but the worst case is the state wins and we still have fin grips.

If you're REALLY excited, you can buy or put together a lower and upper receiver, and promise not to put them together or it's a felony and you go to jail. On June 4th you snap the parts together, and now you have your own "Assault Weapon", but I don't really see a reason why you would do this unless somehow they managed to reban AWs and you have a "rare" grandfathered legal weapon.

Stuff that holds value is all the expensive high quality chit. LMT, DD, Noveske, KAC, etc., basically a bunch of rifles in the $2000 range, but supply of those sucks dink and you probably won't find any in stock for months.

I have a ct ‘other’ in my state we have assault weapons ban but an ‘other’ is an AR that meets certain specs. Hopefully our state follows suit and get rid of the ban as well. If you don’t own a gun and have never get a 10/22 or similar first IMO a .22 will still give you some protection but is much cheaper to shoot and you can get a lot of practice cheap, and learn gun safety ect. But ARs are fun.

Why are you so concerned with resale value? You planning on getting rid of it? I would be more focused on reliability

OP its fine to want an AR, but parts and 223 ammo are pricy and scarce right now due to panic buying. I would take your time.

I'd recommend you start with a smaller investment that youll keep your whole life even after you get an AR later. Get a Ruger 10/22 (or one of the variant clones now that the patent is expired) and some 22 ammo to get your feet wet with guns.

Before the pandemic, a real 10/22 was about $250, sometimes less on special. Now they're easily $100 more.

But from what I've seen a Rossi clone with synthetic stock is $155-160 on budsgunshop. That's cheap as fuk for starting out and getting used to firearms, and even after the panic buying ends, you can't lose much if anything on a rifle that cheap to start with.

Plus a semi-auto 22 can go well for training and is a perfectly reasonable deterrent in self-defense. If SHTF, no looter wants to have anything to do with a 22 when there's plenty unarmed people for easy pickings.

Budsgunshop is always a good baseline.

Just be aware, during panics, the Rolex Submariner of ARs will never ascend in price nearly as much as the lower priced name-brand guns.

If you get a $500-600 basic AR from S&W or Ruger, and extreme panic causes these rifles to go up to $2000, then at the same time, a $1500 LWRC will maybe get you $2600, simply because everybody who knows about and wants an LWRC, BCM or Noveske already has five of them. This happened to people back in 2013 during the last panic. People were overpaying like crazy for $50 lowers while the $200 lowers (with equal markup) were hard to sell.

No need to get a super Gucci gun, they all shoot lead downrange. My M&P Sport II and my Springfield Saint work just fine next to my build.

I'm in CA too and planning on starting an 81%er

You won't find any online stores with CA compliant guns that will ship like Palmetto or anything. Even Sportsman's and Turners are all out of anything AR related except the S&W .22 variety that's Compliant.

As far as the ban overturn.....don't count on it anytime soon. They declared the Mag ban unconstitutional in 2020 and they still haven't gotten past the lower courts stay even now.

Poor**** AR's also depreciate from oversupply during "good" presidencies. If OP really wanted to Jew-max, he should look for the smallest businesses with the highest quality and stock up on those for when demand is high and prices appreciate. Radian, LMT, Larue, etc... You could accumulate a crap ton of parts, then resale them for 60-70% markup.

I think OP specifically wants an AW? If not then there are occasional collectors items on auction sites that sell for big bucks.

Good price for an SP-01 now is probably $750. Good price for a P226 would be $1k, and a USP would probably be $900.

My range has a LWRC DI California complaint for $1700 last month. That was a pretty solid deal.

Your best bet online is to check sportsman's warehouse around 11pm nightly when they update inventory. They ship to store so you won't pay all the BS shipping and dealer fees.

Lol thx, I’m not trying to maximize profit or anything. I just

A) in general, don’t mind spending a bit more of it means that I get something that holds its value. I’m not the kind of person that is happy buying something like a brand new Luxury car that is worth half of what you paid for it the second you drive it off the lot. Especially when there is something like a Porsche that is still a luxury car, but has been known to appreciate in value. You know what I mean?

B) I don’t want to be one of those guys you’re talking about that is crazy overpaying for something now, because the price is inflated on what used to be the really cheap stuff. (Aren’t we in a panic buy cycle?)

I like to buy right for something I consider a king term purchase

I like the idea of starting with a 22 to learn, but also getting something more substantial.

I wasn’t specifically asking for ARs, was just bringing up ARs because the lifting of the ban is kn the news.

But I’ve shot pistols, ARs and shotguns. I found the pistols to actually be fairly difficult to be accurate.

I was also thinking of a shotgun too, I’d like to learn skeet shooting for fun.

Ideally a pistol, shotgun, and AR would be great,… but not sure if I have the room or budget for that

You can only use slugs (no buckshot?)in Ca? After 15 high or regular velocity slugs my shoulder is lightly bruised could be true with the less recoil ones too but never tried. I think a shotgun is great jack of all trades gun and useful in any gun owners aresonal but not a good first gun. Slugs are over 2 a shot shell by me and buckshot 50-80 cents a shell.

Edit: if a shotgun is something you already know you will enjoy, and get a practical use out of ignore me.

I owned (before a boating accident) a nice AR, but honestly for home defense I much prefer a pistol or a shotgun. Just smaller, and easier. AR is something I would want if I legit had to engage multiple armed bad guys from a reasonable distance. But in a messy apocalypse scenario I would actually want an AK. Less accurate, but easy and durable.

For AR I would go with good quality one, and not too heavy, you don’t need a really thick barrel and many attachments.

If you never owned a firearm, like someone above said a Ruger 22 rifle is a nice place to start, easy to train with. Especially for women and smaller people. It’s cheap too, and still fine for home defense.
