What do you consider a decent bench?

What do you think is the true benchmark for bench for most guys that lift?

Most people I know can bench a plate no problem, I still remember the first day I benched 225, but anything over that is not too memorable.

When I hit 3 plates I think will be the ultimate time you can look back and say "das it mayne"

3 plates.

Or 2 plates for 10+ controlled solid reps.

I was able to put up 225 very shortly after I started lifting, but I weighed 180ish. I was putting up 275 within afew months when I first started lifting using starting strength ended up destroying my shoulder. Snapped myself off going too heavy too fast with chit form and big ego on all lifts (shoulder, knee, lower back) and eventually gave up maxxing.

Edit: like the guy below me said, body weight is a big factor.

I recognize that it's a low standard, but I think benching your own bodyweight is respectable

I'd say a 405 bench is when you can actually say you lift

Had a 225 bench withing a month or 2 of lifting, 315 within a year or so.. 405 takes multiple years

Under 4 plates is beginner territory so I'd say when you reach 4 plates you have a decent bench

315 will always be the "I'm going to check this guy out and see if he's legit or not" standard.

Not a flat bar guy... never have been. Always a dumbbell guy. When I reached 125’s I looked at like an accomplishment. Moving forward and getting back into it I’m going tj focus fully on physique and pay no attention to weight. I should have learned early on doing 90lb bells on shoulder press as a freshman. Pinched nerve now I can never do shoulder press again now.

This is the right answer. To actually impress people 200% of BW for a 1RM.

If I see a small guy benching 300 pounds I'm much more impressed than a massive guy benching 400.

A controlled hypertrophy set with 225 does it for me. Rarely if ever see it tho

OP said "for most guys who lift", there's so many more casual lifters now than say 20/30 years ago that I think based off the numbers 405 would be elite.

This

Let’s be real. Most people that casually workout can’t hit 2 plates. Not that it’s like super impressive, but you have to be well trained or naturally stronger than average to lift 2 plates for reps

For non-superheavyweights the standard has pretty much always been double bodyweight. 3x for squat and pull.

Yeah, took me 5 years to go from 300-400. Most of that time was between 350-400. It depends on a variety of factors of course.

To me 405lbs flat barbell bench for at least a strong rep is respectable.

It really depends on size. For somebody my size anything under 405 isn’t respectable whereas that’s huge for somebody of average size.

I can bench 225 and run a 5 min mile. That’s fine with me and let’s me be more athletic and stronger than most people I come into contact with

1.5x your body weight or your weight for reps. giving a hard number as a bottom line is a ridiculous idea
