Do you think Dirty Harrys 44. Magnum was a
practical gun for a Detective or in his case Inspector to use or do you think it was put in for show for the movie?

I was just rewatching Magnum force. Good question, I'll leave it for the gun nuts to weigh in. I have no idea, I always liked the police revolvers (Colt pythons) that the crooked cops wore.

respect harry big time for his stance. he hated the system. hated criminals even more but he knew right from wrong when it came to the institution.
my 2md fav diry harry next to the first one. the dead pool is usually considered the worst but it had some funny quips in it

i think in reality it would be hard to accurately fire follow up shots for most shooters. somewhat impractical to train with as well do to cost per round and kick, though you could probably use a .44 special and retain similar accuracy at close range. This is why most forces use a 9mm, its deadly "enough" at least compared to the old .38 special but with less kick and cost as a bigger round like a 10mm or .44 mag
I think the .45 1911 would be my choice.

A 6โ model 29? Probably not very practical.
The way he described his ammo in Magnum Force made it sound like he was shooting .44 special loads (little brother to the .44 mag).
And if that were the case, he may have been better served with a .357 that were ubiquitous in that era. The revolver would have been smaller and quite a bit lighter.

Remember, the FBI thought full house 10mm was a good idea with the advent of the S&W 1076 after the Miami Dade shootout.

It's totally impractical lol, you should be likely to shoot other people accidentally with it's penetration and only 6 shots, and it's also pretty much guaranteed to kill someone, no chance really of using it just to immobilize. A 9mm or a 40 is perfect for police work, if you want a revolver use a 38.
