I'm not talking about cutting a 55gal drum putting some mesh and calling it a day or something like that.

I'm talking about using some thick metal (3/16"?) to build a firebox and some thicc juicy grates. I'd like to be able to raise or lower one of the grates (for temperature control)

I've got a MIG welder and I know how to turn on an angle grinder.

My dad has made hundreds. You can either do a 'coffin' shape design out of flat plates. Or use a thick round pipe and cut it. No pics of his but here is a basic google.

This is going to sound really dumb, but he doesn't sell them.

He's been welding for about 40 years now. Loves it. Collects scrap iron from job sites that's going to get tossed and brings it home. On his days off, he welds in his back yard. He's been doing it since I was a little kid. Essentially works with iron, designing, building for 7 days a week.


He basically builds them from completely free/scrap material (Even builds the hinges) and gives them away. Or builds them and uses them. I think he currently has about 7 or 8 grills at his house in varying shapes/sizes. He might make one or two per year but he's literally been doing it for 40 years.




I only have one of his grills but its been going strong for about 15 years now. I just have to get him to rebuild the charcoal box and grating that I put the meat on once they rot away. Every so often I heat up lard and baste the metal with it. (According to him its a preservative).

Tell your old man I'll send him a case of hookers and a case of pepsi for one.
