Bought a used Trek in a great condition today. Paid $200. Good deal or bad decisions?


Btw I’m not taking it anywhere with jumps or anything crazy I’m an beginner. Got my 11 ur old a fat tire 26” mongoose so we can some local trials, lighter stuff for us bothered to behind with. Any suggestions on upgrades?

Always, new tires and drivetrain make a bike feel brand new.

Consider getting a Specialized Slaughter GRID for the rear tire and a Purgatory GRID for the front tire.






Deore M5100 crankset can be had rather cheap. Shimano ZEE rear derailleur also. It's a 10 speed that works with Dyna-Sys, has Shadow clutch, runs about $60 for the FR (freeride) model. You will be limited on your cassette range though, since it's a short arm derailleur. For what you're doing should be fine. The shifter can be matched for like $30. I just bought one for myself to go with mine on a build I'm doing. It's originally for a 1x setup, so you'll have to get a different shifter for the left side. Should be cheap and easy. Match the shifter to the front derailleur that you get. Some new grips, maybe a new bar, and you should be good to go. If you want some good cheap pedals, check out the Excelsior Flat MTB Nylon. Best bang for your buck.

The biking community, like all enthusiast communities, over states what you actually need. They will claim a $600 "beginner" bike will break on you for XC single track, but they'll be perfectly fine.

Eventually you'll want to upgrade the shocks, but eh.
