Are there laptops made nowadays that aren't pieces of chit??

It seems that every fuking brand now produces **** laptops. Last ni more than 2 years before they slow down to turtle sped and or the hardware starts dying. Screens fail, batteries stop holding charge, keys break, overheating, shutting down etc.

Apple is good in this regard and makes good quality laptops, albeit expensive, but then you're stuck with Mac os and a computer without certain keys and the need for apple dongles.

I usually buy used thinkpads which so pretty good but buying one new can cost quite a bit

My brother is starting college and needs something for general use, simple good and durable. Regular processor, regular video card, 256 gb storage and 4gb ram, nothing crazy. Doesn't need to play games or whatever.


Any recs?

Like most things in life, laptops are not a set-it-and-forget-it kind of deal, they need some maintenance every once in a while. Heating is because of dust buildup (tight spaces in order to make it small in size) and/or thermal paste being dried up (higher temperatures than desktops). If you service it like once every 1-2 years it will last you infinitely. Get a new battery once it goes to **** (probably in 3-5 years). Reinstall the OS if it becomes slower although this is no longer a thing since they all have SSDs nowadays. I have a 10 year old Asus laptop that I can't seem to find a reason to replace because it runs perfectly, especially since popping an SSD inside of it. In the 10 years I've probably cleaned it and replaced thermal paste a total of 3 times, replaced 1 battery and reinstalled the OS twice...all of it being like 3 hours of combined. The "hurr durr laptops bad, get a macbook" argument is only made by monumental morons that have 0 technical knowledge and ability...or boomers.

To answer your original question, get literally any laptop you can afford and take a little bit of care of it.

PC if you have technical know-how that 99.9% of normies dont have without going to a technical expert. Mac is more user friendly, but for the real tech geeks out there it's grossly restrictive; the fact that you can't even upgrade the ram because its soldered in place on the new models is a good example of this from a hardware standpoint.

Interesting. I never thought of it that way but it does make sense. Like doing maintenance on your car. My wife had two old laptops, a Vaio and a Toshiba that are slow as a motherfuker and I've relegated to junk but I didn't imagine reinstalling the OS would improve it's speed and make it better.

If I took an old laptop, popped Ina new SSD (probably has HDD) and installed windows 7 or 10 you think it'd work well? This kind of stuff is super interesting for me recently, I started an it master program this summer and learning about tech gets me super hyped and I'd like to do some projects.

I went shopping for laptops last month to prepare for college also and didn't find anything that I like or most were just too expensive.

Been using a Chromebook as my main surfing/at home general browsing (no pr0n, srs). I don't know how easy it would be for a student to use the Google doc interface to save as Windows Office type files but think it can be done. Been using it for 3 years+ and probably would get another. We also got a new Windows laptop for Christmas and it is hot garbage. Not only is it slow as fukk, but turning off all privacy invasive bloatware is almost impossible. I know you can't get away from it 100% this day and age, but it's tougher to minimize.

i recommend going with an amd 4000 or 5000 series cpu + a 1080 ips screen. something like that should cost around $400-500. this will probably have 8gb of ram and 256gb ssd drive. in some cases you might even find one with 16gb of ram and 500gb nvme ssd drive for the same price, but try to stay with the mentioned cpu and screen type . keep checking on slickdeals.

I think you're wrong about apple.. I've used Macbooks since like 2008, buy a new one like every 5 years.. All of them were solid and never gave me problems except for the newest 2018 model.. Keyboard is complete garbage and have to restart it so much because it's always freezing.. Maybe the 2018 ones were just chit and I was unlucky but I'm scared of spending a chitload of money on a newer one..

no reason to keep reinstalling windows if you don't install all kinds of garbage on it. today's ssd's all come with trim/garbage collection, which eliminates the need to defrag and reinstall stuff. as long as you're not installing random stuff on your system, and you don't have malfunctioning hardware, then it should run without issues.

I've literally never reinstalled an os. Didn't imagine it was needed. So you put all your data in an external hard drive, reinstall the os and then reinstall all of your programs? Sounds like a pain haha

had a sony vaio that lasted 15 years. the last 5 years it was my garage laptop. was on constantly in a 100F, 100% humidity environment with no complaints. chit was just built better back then

Strong no brand loyalty but I am currently on the same MacBook pro I used in college a decade ago. Works exactly the same.

Other people with apple laptops have expressed similar experiences to me.

I wanted to replace my desktop with a gaming laptop but I always hear about how the warranty service is problematic. Whether it's Razer, Lenovo, etc.. same deal.
