most just become fat drunken slobs and literally check out of the relationship and sexual "marketplace" in general, becoming the definition of beta provider while simultaneously lowering chances of even having a shot / opportunity to step outside the marriage

Yup! Agree 100% one of the dumbest things a man can do when settling down is let himself go and think it's not required of him anymore to look good.

Gotta be able to keep your lady in check. Even if she is a huge b*tch, she will know that you're fully capable of getting younger, less b*tchy women. Might not change her attitude, but it sure will make you less affected by her. You'll have that subconscious feeling of power knowing that you're not stuck in a dead end and still have hope of making it as a man. Even a good relationship, gotta stay at your best to protect your pride from any and all threats, both outside and within.
