I really enjoy doing this.

I have currently taken up musky fishing, so am filming my progression to first fish. Hope it happens this weekend!!

I have to develop a good beer batter.

My wife does some baked in lemon pepper. Thats good, and I have a deep fry batter I make that is real thick and crunches when you bit into it.. gonna do a quick vid on it at some point.

But the natives...its almost like a chicken finger coating. Not sure wtf they do

Genuine question, when fishing for that fish are there ones that you can't or don't take because of size or maturity?

I can't imagine that spear leaving much room for error lol

Good question.

Males are usually smaller. Females that spawn are generally larger.

So they try and take two or three small fish to one large one in the hopes of having a one female to two male ratio.

That also helps with the hatchery eggs to milt (sperm) ratio.

So basically they target the smaller males more, and are sure to milk the females eggs every time they get a female

Mirin OPie, had never heard of walleye spearfishing

Just had some walleye last week from the ottawa river (1.5 hours upstream from the city so the water quality is much more clean), most hngg fresh water fish out there

My uncle and cousin are some of the top walleye fishermen on Lake Erie - win tourneys and what not. The old boat - a 27' sportcraft...man what a setup they had. Several times coming in from an all day trip we had fish and wildlife waiting on us because the charter guys kept reporting him for running illegal charters. But he didn't, they were just friends and family he had. But we always came back with limit and they charter guys struggled.

The fillets are amazing - I just ate a two pound bag two weeks ago after strongman training 26.35oz was 694c 0c 8.8f 140.5p - was amazing.
I heat a pan on high, melt butter, turn the heat down and lay the fillets across and cover. low and slow usually until all the moisture is sucked out, I don't know why, but that's how I like it, a nice browning on the fillets.

Did you cut the cheeks off? The cheeks are fantastic as well.

Always take cheeks. They are great!

As for low and slow, my wife bakes them, and takes the cover off for the last bit.

good man on the cheeks - if you go on youtube there are guys that show how to cut out what they call walleye wings, tried them two summers ago, they were ok, but nothing like the cheeks and fillets.

Yeah Erie was really bad for awhile - my uncle sold the big boat and was done, but then my cousin bought a smaller one and they went back to an easier style (all dipsy divers no down riggers or planer boards) when the numbers were coming back up. In 2018 I went out for the first time in a long time and we had limit, which I think is 6/ea, in under an hour and a half. Put a line out, by the time you were ready to drop the next one, a fish was on. Almost one after another. We realized how fast we had 16, we started pulling in lines to not go over limit and we had two on that never tripped the dipsy

Amazing how fast you can catch them when th population is there and they are on.

You ever get over to lake St Clair? I hear it has an incredble fishery for almost all species.
